Family dresses....

MOB So Cal, on July 27, 2020 at 12:26 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 11

In another thread, I posted a photo of my 1987 wedding dress yesterday. My dress incorporated the skirt from my mom's 1948 wedding gown with a new bodice I made because I was too tall to wear her dress (probably too wide as well... Smiley winking ). Daughter tried on my dress a few years ago when she got engaged, but she's nearly 4" taller than I am, so it was a no go. We did, however, use fabric from the dress to wrap her bouquet, so that "Gramma, Auntie, and Mommy were all 'holding her hand' on her wedding day." My eldest sister wore our mom's dress in 1980 without any significant changes from the way mom wore it.... I love "family dresses," so here are some photos of ours. Around the time daughter got engaged, Elle posted this video showing brides trying on their mom's dress -- it still makes me cry. Any family ties with your wedding dress?

Clearly, we kind of love traditions!

I LOVE the sleeves on your mom’s dress and the lace sleeves on yours look so similar to my own mom’s dress. They’re both beautiful!

It’s a really pretty dress!! Here’s my mom and dad, circa 1972...my moms dress yellowed really bad over the years and we no longer have it (idk what she did with it actually.)Family dresses.... 5

My mom wore a mini-dress back in 1970. As a teen I wore the dress often out and about but my body type would no longer fit that dress today not to mention it was very "heavy" for being a mini.

I love the traditions you shared, so beautiful.

Very cool tradition. There is no way I could fit into my mom's dress even if I wanted to. However, I do plan to wear the hat and coat she left the reception in at the end of our reception as it will match our colours.

That’s awesome! My mom didn’t keep her dress, but I would have used some fabric from it for my wedding if she had.

I love this! What an incredible family tradition! Smiley heart

I didn't wear anything from my mom, but we did use their recessional song as a special nod to my parents' wedding!

So amazing. Thank you so much for sharing!

My mom wore a pretty informal dress that I tried on at some point when I was a teenager. I did not wear it to my own wedding but have thought about asking her if I can have it to wear for some other wedding related event - maybe on our honeymoon or something.

I love family dresses! Unfortunately we don't have a tradition like this. Not that we could. I tried on my grandma's dress as a teenage, and could hardly get it over my booty (which has only gotten bigger lol). My moms first wedding dress was a no go as that marriage ended very quickly in divorce. And her wedding dress from her marriage with my dad has been lost with the years. But, to keep a part of my grandma with me (she passed 13 years ago), I will be having part of her dress sewn into mine as my something old! I also had a few other pieces cut for my cousins, one of whom got married this year and the other who is impatiently waiting for the proposal.

My mom's dress was VERY 80s, with the satin, covered in lace (which I hate), and had the giant puffy sleeves, and the enormous shoulders... it was horrible. She completely understood me not wanting to wear it, and they surprised me by paying for my dress when I picked out the one that I wanted, which is a very simple strapless ball gown that my mom and fmil called "boring" the first time I tried it on xD

My mom's dress would have been too tiny for me to wear (and aside from that, it jumped up and down SCREAMING 1972) - but I had her veil taken off of the headband and wore it.
