Family Dress?

Kaitlyn, on July 16, 2019 at 3:24 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 4

Is anyone wearing and/or altering a family members dress?

I've been going back and forth with the idea of wearing my mother's dress. It's a little dated (helloooooo puffy 80's sleeves) but still gorgeous. Since my mother passed away when I was 17, my dad suggested I try her dress since I'm the same size she was when they got married.

I tried it on and it fit really well, besides needing to do something about the sleeves. My MOH suggested taking them off and using them to wrap my bouquet, which I love that idea.

Is anyone else doing or has done something similar? How did that work for you?

I was considering wearing my moms dress, but it just seemed like such a toss up to get it altered and if I even liked it. Have you tried on dresses? That's a good way to see the shape and style you want vs. what your family dress is.

I’ve tried on like almost every style (mermaid, sheath, ballgown, exaggerated a-line) and I’m really all over the place with the style. Hers is kind of a toned-down ballgown style, it’s not really a big skirt, but it lays similar to a ballgown and has a nice train and the kind of lace on the hemline that I like. Plus, taking the sleeves off would make it sort of high-neck illusion looking, which I like as well. But my favorite style has been a halter neck personally, the way it shows off my shoulders and all of that.

I wanted to but my mum is about 6 inches shorter than me so the dresses hemline sits funny, and she was pregnant with me when she wore it. So it's tailored to give room in the middle which is good for a baby bump but not my food baby! Where I live we have two tailors who have their own shops who do wedding dresses and prom gowns this way. If I was 6 inches shorter I might have done it.

Hey Kaitlyn! It really sounds like a beautiful idea to wear your moms dress, but obviously only if it is something that you want too.

Have you consulted a seamstress about what you would like to do to change the dress to fit your personal style? You might be surprised by what s/he can do! I would definitely mention that you are interested in halter neck styles and see if this is something that can be achieved. It's worth asking! 😊
