Fall wedding vs winter wedding

Franceska, on July 10, 2020 at 4:53 PM Posted in Planning 0 15

Can you guys share your thoughts or experiences on a fall wedding vs a winter wedding? Originally I wanted a winter wonderland themed wedding in early January because I love the season and love how unpopular a winter wedding is but we live in New York and there’s a high chance of a snowstorm ruining it. Now we’re considering mid November like the 11th, about 2 weeks before thanksgiving. We like it because it’s right before the holiday season is in full swing. Would doing a wintery theme in November be out of place or weird? (we would probably adjust the colors from light blue to a blush/ivory/gold to more fit the season but would have winter elements like snowflakes, etc). Would you pick a fall or winter wedding and why? Thanks!

Do you plan on having a lot of guests from out of state? I would just be careful because around holidays people may not have the extra money to travel. If that’s not a problem, then I think you’re idea is good!

I’m partial to fall personally, but if you love winter go for it. I’m from CO, so I would not be at all fazed by a winter wonderland theme in November, skiing is already in full swing!

Yeah we would have people coming from California, New Jersey, Connecticut, Texas, Maryland, Florida, Pennsylvania and Canada😭 but thanksgiving in Canada is in October if that makes a difference

Do you think that it would be a problem traveling so close to the holiday? We all know that airline prices go up those months. If it’s not a problem I say go for it!

My wedding was the weekend before thanksgiving because we have tight schedules and we wanted fall and that’s when we could do it. We did have some traveling issues but the people who really wanted to be there were there. Tbh I have less money after the holidays but if I knew in advance I could save up. I would find snowflakes in November a little out of the ordinary, but why not? I wouldn’t want to risk a snowstorm and have no one show up.

Both are beautiful. Yes it snows in some areas as early as October. Travel in general is easier in the fall months ( less weather-related road closures and airport closures) and less expensive. Follow your heart and send out save the dates so guests can make travel plans for whichever season you choose.

So the majority of people we’re inviting would be coming to New York to spend thanksgiving anyway and we considered having our wedding the weekend after thanksgiving so they wouldn’t have to make more than 1 trip but my mom, friends and a couple family members said people wouldn’t be trying to attend a wedding thanksgiving weekend. Having it closer to thanksgiving seemed more convenient to me. Also, do you care if your anniversary will fall on thanksgiving in the future? I personally don’t but my fiancé isn’t about it.

I’m not really sure, but it’s cheaper than having to travel in the winter. I’ll have to see, thanks!

If there's any chance of weather ruining your day, especially a storm, I would steer clear away from it because weather is SO unpredictable. I think November would be a better choice on that alone. Even if you do have your wedding in November, I feel like it's also close enough to winter that you can decorate however you want!

We went from Winter to Fall back to Winter lol. I've always loved the idea of Winter weddings but it also depends on which is least expensive lol. We have a marble theme and we'll have pops of wine and navy blue with silver linings. That's probably as winter as it's going to look lol.

    Good Luck!

To me the weekend after thanksgiving is more about family time than the weekend before. Idk if other people feel that way. Thanksgiving was soo late last year so I know in the future our anniversary will fall on thanksgiving sometimes and we really don’t mind. We don’t plan to make a huge deal out of our anniversary every year and wouldn’t mind spending it with family some years.

I also think the weekend after thanksgiving is more about family but I have cousins who are in college and friends in grad school and they have the whole week of thanksgiving off, but the weekend before they still have school commitments. We do make a huge deal out of our current anniversary so I imagine our wedding anniversary will be the same 😂 I don’t care about having our anniversary on thanksgiving some years because I just figured that specific year we could tone it down lol, my fiancé just doesn’t want it in the middle of the holidays

Yea I get that. Our friends in school were the main ones who didn’t come, saying they had too much work. Having finished grad school I wouldn’t have missed someone’s wedding but they felt differently. Our original dating anniversary was ruined bc we had some relationship issues so the whole anniversary thing went out the window for us. We sort of gave up on that being a special thing.

I love a winter wedding aesthetically, but my mom got married in January in NJ and a storm almost forced her to cancel the night before. November or early Dec is my vote because I think you can still have winter elements (spiced drinks, velvet, warm colors, etc) without risking a snow issue.

I chose November 12th because I always wanted a late fall wedding, but we considered doing a winter wedding as well. I live in Connecticut so I understand the weather aspect! I picked when I did because there’s a good chance the weather will still be nice so we can do things like the ceremony and cocktail hour outside with some heaters added and people won’t freeze. I think adding the wintery feel is totally fine if you choose to not do a winter wedding! We definitely worried a lot about the weather because we have people coming from out of state who we wouldn’t want risking a long drive if there’s a storm. But of course, there could be a storm in November as well.
