Fake flowers for the bridemaids bouquets, good idea or terrible?

Coffee&tea335, on November 22, 2014 at 5:28 PM Posted in Planning 0 20

We are trying to save money wherever we can while still putting together a decent wedding. FH argued that we don't really need bridesmaid bouquets, and I thought up what I think is a pretty good compromise--my friend works in a Michael's crafts tore and does the flower arrangements there. They're very nice looking and I plan to go in soon to price stuff and see what could work. We just want simple white bouquets, maybe with a little color thrown in. (one florist showed me that all white flowers will look washed out and undefined in photos). But the thought of wedding photos has me worried--will fake bouquets look overly tacky? The bride (me) will definitely have real flowers.

Are we being clever or making a mistake that will look awful on the day of? Anyone with experience with this, please let me know what you think!

My mom is making all our bouquets from stuff at Michaels. So far, I love them. And she was a florist with high standards, so you can imagine she wants her daughters wedding bouquet to look amazing Smiley smile

I think it will look fine. We're using all fake flowers in our wedding for bouquets and centerpieces.

I think it will be okay. All of my flowers are fake.

I hate fake flowers and I hated them EVEN MORE when I found out how expensive they are. I'd rather have a small bouquet of only cheap real flowers like carnations or baby's breath from the grocery store than fake flowers. Can your girls carry clutches or even a big flower?

I think fake flowers can be great. I think they are much more durable then real flowers, and with certain types of flowers the fake ones can look even better then the real thing, plus you will know exactly what your bouquet will look like. I am using fake flowers because a lot of the flowers I like are not in season when I am get married in Jan. All real flowers are such a waste of money to me. Real flowers are great also if you can get them wholesale. I live in Los Angeles and there are huge whole sale shops that sell to Michaels and Joanns, so we can get them at good prices.

I think if done right, fake flowers can look great. If the bouquet is put together in 10 minutes with whatever fake stuff was on clearance, it looks bad and everyone can tell. If you spend time and chose the right fake ones, they don't look tacky and cheap. When I was in my brother's wedding, my SIL made all fake bouquets with white roses and one color rose in the middle. They worked pretty well and I still have mine on my entertainment center as decor.

We did not want to spend the money on real flowers and I didn't want to put time AND money into fake ones, so we are doing something totally different and I am using artisan crafted fake flowers that are a trademark for my city that I can get for $10/bouquet with the only DIY as any embellishments (ribbon wrap, etc) I may choose to have.

I was a bridesmaid last weekend, and the bride made her and my bouquet out of fake flowers. They looked great.

Im doing a single giant dahlia for my bms bouquets. I think the single flower is cute, and its only $20 vs $80 per bouquet

Good idea. My sister made bouquets with fake flowers for her bridesmaids and centerpieces, and they turned out very pretty.

I don't see the need to pay out the nose for something that's not going to last. I'm having silk flowers because they're also going to part of my bridesmaids gifts. For the style of bouquet that I want as a bride it's going to cost and leg and possibly my first born, I can buy up silk during the months leading up and be able to save the bouquet to put in baby girl's room as a heirloom.

I am going to use flowers from costco. 24 roses for $15, can't beat that price. There are some very simple bouquets that you can put together with some ribbon.

I'm not using fake flowers in my bouquets, but i am using some around our venue as decorations. But i wanted to let you know that i read one Bride's post on here recently that said she had used Artificial flowers for her bouquets and they turned out beautiful in the photos. So i really don't think you have anything to worry about. Some artificial flowers these days are so real looking that the only way to know they aren't real is to touch them. Best wishes !!

    I'm using all fake flowers.

My sister did the same for her wedding and you can't tell in the photo, they look beautiful.

To me the cost of real flowers is a lot for something that doesn't last and to be honest isn't that important in the grand scheme of things. People aren't really going to pay too much attention to the flowers.

I made all the bouquets and bout's with silk flowers. We used fresh flowers for the centerpieces. Everyone complimented how pretty ALL the flowers were. So many people were genuinely surprised my bouquet was fake flowers.

People either love them or hate them. I personally am with you and would rather cut costs on the flowers for something that people will not really remember.

That's the way we were going to do. It's cheaper than expensive flowers that last one-two days versus fake flowers that last a lifetime and they can be gifts to the bridesmaids instead of buying them gifts, let that be their gift. Kills 3 birds with one stone.

In my case, the bridesmaids didn't give much feedback on it, so to save more money, I decided on the week of the wedding to go to the supermarket, get 4 bouquets of fresh flowers, cut the stems, wrap them up, and leave it at that. If they didn't like my fake bouquets, I'd use the flowers to go in the centerpieces to save money and only spend $10 a bouquet that's even cheaper than fake flowers. Their gifts may be giftcards to Bath and body works or a small spa gift set. Still, cheaper route.

Your BM's bouquets can serve double-duty as centerpieces on their table(s).

Or one large real flower looks nice (peony or sunflower depending on when your wedding will be held).
