I am getting to the point where I may want to start tanning... but I can't decide what to do. I have fair skin, but when I tan my skin has a nice "glow" you could say. I am just so scared of getting skin cancer that I may not though. My sister says, oh you can't get cancer from a month or two of...

I am getting to the point where I may want to start tanning... but I can't decide what to do. I have fair skin, but when I tan my skin has a nice "glow" you could say. I am just so scared of getting skin cancer that I may not though. My sister says, oh you can't get cancer from a month or two of tanning but I know that's not true. My honeymoon is in Florida and I don't want to look like a lobster from a sunburn! HELP!!

What have ya'll thought/ are doing?

After 4 years of working at the salon i know alot. the basics if doing beds/booths:

    - start off slowly time-wise (with you & the new tech, i'd start around 3-5mins). go every other day for ~2.5 weeks.

    - slowly increase your time. after 3 weeks, you can be up to 15 or whatever the middle time is these days.

    - start with the 'cheaper' beds ('burning beds' thus why i said to start off slower)

    - then, if you have the cash switch to the pricier beds aka 'browning' beds. you'll have to stay in these for a little longer but the outcome is much better & you get to relax, esp if the rooms have radios!

-timewise for the browning beds, once you have your base... you can pretty much stay in there for the max time but again, start slowly.

    - use lotion! why? think of your skin tin foil all crinkly. you won't get a smooth tan if it's like that. lotion smooths out those crinkles thus getting an even tan.

    - UVB vs UVA: basically, UVB penetrate just below the skin. whereas UVA penetrate...

Deeper into the epidermis kicking your melanin on which is what essentially makes you tan. check out this website for more details:

pertaining to the spray tans, it depends on the salon... some carry them while some don't. just make sure you dry before putting clothes back on!!!

no problem for checking in your area. that's what i do now.

    hope this all helps.
