Faded engagement ring

Hailey, on April 4, 2017 at 6:22 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 14

Long story short I made the mistake of wearing my engagement ring to work (pediatric emergency room) after we got engaged. I bought a plain metal band after I realized what he hand sanitizer was doing to the color but didn't think they had gotten that bad... until my wedding band arrived yesterday. They are very noticeably different colors. Since they were bought on ETSY I don't know how/if I can get the engagement ring re-dipped. I messaged the seller, no response yet.

Just wondering if any of you had any ideas or experience with this.

Any jeweler should be able to redip it for you

You can bring it to any jeweler to have dipped. I would recommend you go and get a silicone ring for work.

You work in a pediatric emergency room, so you obviously have a background in chemistry. What is your ring made of that can have a chemical reaction with hand sanitizer?

I had heard you couldn't re-dip rose gold?

Silicone was trapping water underneath and I didn't like that. I bought a plain metal 4mm band that I wear now

You should be able to get it re-dipped at any local jeweler. I got a quote recently of $60.

Rose gold shouldn't be dipped at all. Its actually a gold-copper alloy. So if its reacting with something from hand sanitizer (which is mainly ethanol) you may have a bigger problem and should contact the etsy seller because rose gold or any gold should not react with ethanol. Sometimes sanitizer can leave a film on things and it just needs to be cleaned as well. (I'm a chemist.)

    What Susan said.

I have a 14k rose gold e ring and use hand sanitizer and nothing happens.

BUT my wedding band is made out of sterling silver and is dipped to look like rose gold and it fades pretty easily.

Agree with Susan. Not to assume or be rude but if it's real that shouldn't happen.

I ALWAYS take my rings off putting lotion on, showering, washing hands, hand sanitizer etc..... just in case something do happen.

Are the rings both solid rose gold?? Maybe they are different karats? Like my ring is 14k rose gold but I've seen bands that are 10k rose gold.

Also rose gold never needs to be dipped. I wear my rose gold rings to work as well, I'm a nurse and use hand sanitizer all day long, and have had no problems with that
