Exploring more options for our cake...

Rachel, on February 22, 2021 at 1:40 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 8
Hi, Everyone!

Since my last post about the wedding cake tasting, my fiancé and I have decided to explore more options when it comes to our cake.
There are a couple of reasons why. The biggest reason is, we had quite a bit of cake leftover from the tasting box and we decided to take it home with us to try with our parents and “revisit” them ourselves to make sure we liked everything as much as we did the first time.
Here’s what we ultimately decided. While the cakes were good, we weren’t necessarily blown away by any of them. There were no flavors that I felt the need to have a second or third bite of, and that was the same experience I had when we first tried them. I think we were caught up in the moment and just excited to have cake (especially me since I LOVE cake) that we didn’t remember that this is our WEDDING CAKE, and we don’t want to settle for anything less than delicious cake and flavors. My parents also confirmed that they weren’t blown away, either. While I know it’s ultimately up to my fiancé and I to decide what we will have and what flavors, etc. will be included, my parents’ reactions only helped us decide that we would continue to look and see what else is out there.
We are still going to hold our date for now with our current cake girl just in case, but I have already sent out a couple inquiries to other potential cake bakers. I just don’t want to settle on the cake as that’s one of the most important elements for us.

It sounds like you just have not visited the right baker yet. We tried a couple of different bakery's and when we found the one who chose, we knew we had to book her! Neither my wife nor myself are huge on cake, but we couldn't get enough of our wedding cake! We also had her make several different desserts and did a dessert bar. So that is another option.

That’s great! I definitely think we need to keep looking which is why I’m glad we didn’t just go with our first experience. What flavors did you select? We’re thinking about shaking that up, too!

We did a cinnamon brown sugar with cinnamon buttercream frosting (it was to die for!). Then we did a more traditional fresh strawberry vanilla with vanilla buttercream frosting. For desserts we did mini cheesecakes, oreo pudding shooters, banana pudding shooters, donuts, and cookies.

It doesn't like sound you have found the right bakery for you guys, but luckily you still have plenty of time. For our wedding, we had a very simple cake which was vanilla with vanilla buttercream icing. We had 6 flavors to pick from. My husband's favorite was strawberry, but sadly I'm allergic to strawberries so we couldn't go with that option. Strawberries also tend to be a popular garish for wedding cakes, but that wasn't an option either. My husband and I both don't like coconut so that option was quickly eliminated. I tend to think chocolate cake can be too sweet, my husband didn't like the banana, and I don't remember the other vanilla, so that only left us with vanilla which is my preferred type of cake anyways. We also had a candy bar with an assortment of different black & red (our wedding colors) candy.

I agree! I definitely think we need to keep exploring our options. Plus if it means I get to try more cake, that works for me! Funny that you mention vanilla because vanilla/vanilla buttercream is my favorite cake of all time! I’m definitely excited to try more options. I’m also trying to remember that this is OUR cake first and foremost, so I’m wanting to pick flavors that we enjoy but also stay open minded to others we might not have thought of.

Getting to try more cake is definitely exciting! Like you, vanilla/vanilla buttercream is my favorite as well. Between being allergic to strawberries and being picky, it doesn't leave much room for different flavors.

I agree! It could be worse, cake is my favorite dessert so I’m a little excited 😄 plus it gives us another excuse to go back to our wedding site!
