Exploding box invitations

Aloha! I’m new to WeddingWireSmiley smile I wanted to know your thoughts on an exploding box wedding invitation? I wanted to do something creative and even put French candies and a French tea bag with the invitation in it... it’s paris themed wedding...is this going overboard? And should I just stick with a paper envelope invitation?

Hi Grace! Welcome to WeddingWire! Just to clarify-- what is an exploding box invitation? Your ideas sound adorable, especially the French theme! I would love to help you think of some ideas! Also, how many guests will you be inviting? Will these boxes go to each of your guests?Smiley smile

I didn't know the terminology so I had to look it up. Is this what you mean? Looks like a cute idea. This would seem a bit "extra" for me, but I'm a pretty simple person. I'd also wonder how much postage it would be to mail a bunch of things like this.

    Why?

    aren't they expensive to buy?

    aren't they expensive to mail?

isn't there anything better you could do with the money?

    what's the point?

Just go to VistaPrint...they have invitations for 58 cents a piece. if you REALLY want to splurge, go find a stationery store that sells CRANE and get engraved invitiations. Or Tiffany & Co. Mom found an artist who took her engraved wedding invitation and mounted it on acid-free cardboard and hand drew a floral border around it and framed it. Very elegant. Can't do that with an exploding box...

It seems like a unique idea that would surprise your guests. However, as some said it does seem a little unnecessary cost wise and may come across with your guests having really high expectations about the wedding itself.

I think it’s a fun, cute, unique idea. As long as you can afford it, and you don’t mind paying a little extra on invitations then you should do them!

I think those are fun but the shipping costs would put me off.
Maybe use those for bridesmaid proposals (if you haven't asked anybody yet)??

Aloha this box is exactly like the picture below. I was thinking of doing an effiel tower in the middle and getting it custom to say maybe BE MY GUEST instead of save the date....

Aloha yeah lol not to sure about deciding yet it does seem to be extra though it will be almost 1 grand for 100 invites but sometimes I wonder if my guests would feel extra special if I did something out of the box? Besides just a letter still debating though here’s my other choice of invitation it’s a pop up...

Yeah the cost is defiantly twice as what it would be for letters.... I want something fun and exciting but that’s true about guests expectations didn’t think about that one.

They are both interesting choices. But, if I received a super elaborate (likely expensive) invitation, I'd be expecting the entire wedding to be pretty high-end. Invitations do set the tone to a certain extent. If the rest of your plans/budget will likely meet the expectation set by a pretty "extra" invitation, then go for it. (But I wouldn't spend $1000 on invitations to a relatively lower-budget wedding. That's kind of like buying a $2000 dress and then asking your guests to provide potluck and byob -- they just don't go together.)

Oh yes that’s very true. Do you folks think an exploding box invitation would be suited for a hotel wedding venue... i’ll be having my wedding at the 5 star hotel in Seattle the Olympic Fairmont hotel i’m going to have planned entertainment from beginning to end some examples are harpist, violinist, caricaturist, special lighting with fog and DJ, and much more..

I think so as long as you have plenty of food and an open bar all night. I got married at the Fairmont in Sonoma and it was very high end.

Yeah about the food they have so many options for late night food stations did you do this for your wedding or is having food late at night go to waste.... I’ll be having a 2 course meal with cake and a candy bar and passed hourderves for cocktail hour.... as for the open bar it comes with a open bar for 4 hours do you think that’s a good time? I’ll be having wine during dinner and champagne toast as well. And possibly a signature cocktail but i’m thinking maybe not due to people not even liking it and wasting it??? Thoughts? Thanks!

I think it's cute, and if you want to go for it. I do think there are other things you can do if you want to make your guests feel special. If I was a guest, I would open it and think it's cool, but I wouldn't be sure where to store it until the wedding (I typically hang invites on my fridge until the event and this seems like something you couldn't really hang on a fridge). It's also something that I would throw out as soon as the wedding is over. It wouldn't necessarily make me feel special. I would splurge more on wedding favors, food (after party food would be nice), welcome bags for people staying at the hotel, or other entertainment (the caricature idea is cute and something that would make me feel special as a guest). Good luck!

I’m having second thoughts do you think a metallic bubble envelope would be just as good with a nice invitation, French tea maybe with a honey spoon and a French candy? I think it would defiantly be less too since it’s not a box being shipped.... what are your thoughts or is the explosion box overall nicer?
