Expiration Situation

Chelsea, on December 31, 2019 at 8:27 PM Posted in Planning 0 7
My license and passport are scheduled to expire a month before the big day. Of course I need to renew them but not sure if there's a way to either get them renewed with my new name (1 month premature) or avoid a 2nd renewal fee? Or do I delay changing the name? Anyone else been in this situation?

I can't speak to your license, but you can apply for a name change for free for the passport within a year of getting it. With your license, you may have to just pay the cost, but I would check the website of your state's motor vehicle commission.

In order to get your license you normally need a copy of your marriage license and social security card with your new last name. You can't get a new social without being married already.

You will for the license (some states offer a smaller fee if you just renewed and need to change your name or address, so check that). Your passport can be "renewed" up to fifteen years after it expires, so let it go and then renew after you change your name. https://www.usa.gov/passport

You'll need your marriage license and SSN to change them. It was only.$5 in Illinois compared to the $30 it is normally. So hopefully your state doesnt make you pay full price for a corrected one!

You won’t be able to do it without a marriage license. So I would just pay the extra $28 for your DL (or whatever it costs in your state). I would call them and see if they have other options. For the passport, you can get a free name change within a year of renewal, but unless you’re traveling soon you could probably just wait on that one til you have your new name.
