After getting yet another $10K PLUS proposal for catering today, I couldn't be more frustrated! So much so that at this point, it's making me rethink my vision of the elegant plated dinner with cocktails I've pictured since we booked our venue. I don't want to go into my wedding reception with an attitude...reducing every head to the $100 PLUS/per person estimates we're receiving. Right now, I feel like this is what I'm slowly being reduced to. Am I being unrealistic for the DC/Metro area (and maybe I am..just tell me and I'll shut up and deal with this reality!)? I just didn't realize reception costs would make me feel like I need to get a second job just to feed everyone! When will the "fun" start with all this planning? Sigh....

I'm really sorry to hear about your frustrations! I agree that meal stations (still served on china) may be a nice alternative. You could also have a cocktail hour and then limit beverages to beer, wine and soda. Wine is still a very classy way to go.

I set my photography packages up so that people like you can customize what you want without having to pay for a bunch of extra things you don't need. Let me know if you wanna talk!

Same here, only I *have* to use this caterer that my venue has. I'm not happy so far - it takes weeks for them to return a simple email, and when I call, the person we're working with is never in. I'ts unprofessional and rude. Plus, they're nickle-and-diming me, especially on table linens and flatware/silverware/glassware. I just sent the Caterer a very tactful email last night where I simply said their overall cost doesn't fit in my budget, even with 25% attrtition, and that I've found linens, etc. online at Party Rental places for half what they're charging. I *did* ask him for his thoughts or suggestions, to soften the blow that they're overcharging - & give him a chance to offer some alternatives. Also, the tasting is supposed to be this weekend, and he's already not included our appetizers in it, something I also brought up in my email. We'll see if I actually get anything back. Ugh, if I would have known this is what I'd be dealing with, I'd have booked another venue!

Cont'd. I mean, the food/drink is right on target, but the staff and cost for setting a table is ricdiculous. I hope I don't need to play hard-ball and go the venue and insist on using someone else. Not sure the Event Planner at the venue is really in my corner, either - he tried to say the tables and chairs that were included in the venue contract were actually supposed to be provided - at a substantial cost - by the caterer. I'm glad I insisted he double-check, but I can't shake the feeling that he should have known that before we sat down, as it's been several months I've been dealng with the venue now. Really not feeling good about this part of the planning.

They have many other choices as well - plus an area to request special pricing based on your event size.
