Exercise for Exercise Haters?

Sarah, on July 22, 2019 at 8:38 AM Posted in Fitness and Health 0 29

I feel like most people enjoy some kind of exercise; the human body is made to move... but I actually HATE it. I stopped exercising regularly about a year ago and it really shows. I don't necessarily want to lose weight, but I want to get in shape and feel good about my body before my wedding in May.

I tried the "buy a gym membership so you're motivated to get your money's worth" method and it was just a waste of money. Does anyone have exercise suggestions for a bride who hates exercise?! And suggestions to make a routine stick?

Omgosh I'm one of those hate exercise people aha. So at the start of this year I found Barre and fell for it. Barre is hard but the movements are so small and you don't really sweat aha .

Zumba or a line dance class. I love Zumba and I have recently started a line dance class. Great workout! Lots of fun!

Walk. I hate excersize but I can generally muster up a walk. It's free, it's easy it requires barely any effort.

Yep, try barre! I hated exercise, and sweating and I fell in love with barre! it will also help you more with toning than focusing on losing weight.

I know you’re not into memberships but hear me out. I go to Planet Fitness, costs me $10/mo and because their target audience is kinda lazy people(me) they have big TVs with every channel you can watch. I go there and do my stretches, do my weights and for the cardio which takes the longest I just watch TV when I’m on the elliptical machine. This sounds crazy but I watch Food Network(Chopped, baby!) and by the time I’m done watching TV I’ve burned 300 calories on top of whatever I burned doing weights.

Exercise is never going to be “fun” for me but I have an injury and doctor has ordered exercise to get stronger again. TV at least distracts me from how much I hurt.

It’s worth a shot, or look into a dance class maybe?

I agree with the walking (depends on where you live, though), but I just use workout videos on youtube. Alo Yoga is my general go to, but if you aren't a yoga person, all you have to do is search what you arent interested in! And you can find videos as short or as long as you'd like.

As for making your routine stick, don't force yourself for more time than you want to, otherwise you'll just be miserable. 20 minutes of yoga is just fine for me.

This is literally exactly what I do. I have Planet Fitness too and I just watch TV and try to forget I'm on an elliptical. Or I bring my phone and watch a show on Netflix that I'm really interested in. It helps a lot!

I also try to go to one dance class per week, but I happen to enjoy dance. Maybe just try something different. Depending where you live, there might be barre, zumba, yoga, TRX, aerial silk classes. A group or club might motivate you to stick with it!

I had to find a class that I actually enjoy. I have a gym membership at PF and probably haven't gone in over 6 months, lol! A couple months ago this hot yoga/inferno pilates place near me was having a new member deal and I decided to try it. The hot yoga was really intense and it wasn't my favorite but then I tried the inferno pilates and fell in love!!! I actually enjoy going so I actually go! Try that or barre or dance or even aerial arts (this is like the people who climb up fabric and do cool tricks, I do it sometimes and it is SO MUCH fun and an amazing workout!). Just find something fun for you, you will be much more likely to stick to it!

Classes and group fitness are the only things I can really stick with. I'm bad at keeping myself going if I'm doing something like treadmill workouts, but having an instructor in front of me and being surrounded by others doing the same thing keeps me motivated. Also, you tend to see the same people at classes every week, so even if you're not really friends with them, a quick hi or smile among "regulars" is another thing that makes me feel like I should continue to come back.

I really hate exercise too, but I go to the gym most mornings before work (m-f) for 30-40 mins simply because I also love to eat, so since I know I can’t get away with both (eating like I want to and being sedentary), I just do it. Everything in life is a trade off.
For me, I LOVE music, so I have a bunch of different playlists that I use, and I actually coordinated the songs and tempo to different days (treadmill, elliptical, bike, motivated days, lazy days...). Also, keep it a routine and part of your day - there will be days you flat out don’t feel like it — go anyway and allow yourself a light day! More than half the battle is showing up. Good luck!

Have you tried kickboxing? It’s a great workout (and a great way to release any built up frustration) but it’s fun! The gym I go to let’s you try a class for free to see if you like it - might be worth checking in to in gyms near you? I go with a friend and we hold each other accountable because neither of us wants to be the reason we don’t go!

I have a gym membership but I get all of my workouts on Pinterest. They have a lot of good ones that you could do at home with some small weights. I also bought a set of resistance bands and there are so many free workouts on YouTube. Hope this helps!

I notice when I stop working out my diet also goes to crap. When I was engaged I hired a trainer got the first time and she said if money was too tight to focus on diet because that’s 80%. I went back to eating the way I used to when single—keto! Low carbs/sugar (I’ve always loved protein & salads). I lost the 15 I had put on and felt so much better!

I did low low carbs then during a few two-week sprints NO carbs (no rice, bread, potatoes, starchy veggies like corn or carrots, beans, alcohol, coffee with sugared creamer, fruit—that was the hardest).

Maybe keto with daily light walks (20 min) can get you there!

I love barre, yoga and pilates. I like exercise that doesn't take a lot of thought and doesn't go too fast. Like what help is flailing my body around trying to keep up with the class. 🤷‍♀️

I don't love working out, but I do it for my health. I do belong to a gym, but I love walking and for me it's my main form of exercise. I'll to different parks and neighborhoods and just walk with my niece or nephew, sister-in-law, a friend.

I'm going to add to the group shouting Barre - I *love* Barre workouts - unfortunately, where we live now, there isn't a studio close to us - but I did it for a while before the wedding and I felt beautiful and confident on my wedding day. Now, I just walk the dog lol.

I do online workouts at home.
Beach body is $100 and you literally get options of thousands of different types of workouts. And it gives you lots of meal ideas as well.

    Best investment ever!

Ask a friend to join you.

If you partner with a friend, you can share your progress, brainstorm motivational ideas, and hold each other accountable. Everything is better with a buddy!
