Every penny counts - Sharing an idea

Courtney, on December 16, 2015 at 11:45 AM Posted in Community Conversations 0 22

This might seem silly to a lot of you but I just thought I would share something I just saw.

Every penny (or dime) counts, we are paying for our wedding almost entirely on our own so I'm always interested in little money saving ideas. If you're like FH and I, there is always spare change laying around the house.

So I saw this on Pinterest and thought I'd share and maybe try it out. Supposedly if you fill a 2 liter bottle with dimes, it will equal $700. Based on the math I'm seeing, I would think more like $500 but still, that's $500 that could go towards something in the end, like honeymoon activities. Our wedding is in June so I'm sure there's no way I will fill a 2 liter bottle (or even half of one) by then but I figured I'd try it out and just see how much I can total by wedding time.

Again, this is just something fun I thought I'd share and I'm sure it won't actually amount to that much. Maybe others will want to try and share their totals too.

My (then 4 yr old) daughter picked up every penny she found on the street for a whole year and saved it for Disney world and by the time we went and cashed it she had $150 in spending money! If a 4yr old can do that, l can't wait to see how much DH and I can save

My grandparents would save loose change in a hatbox with a slit cut in the lid. They'd use that money on vacations.

Now DH & do the same (in a piggy bank, not a hatbox). It's surprising how much you can accumulate in a year!

This reminds me of John Oliver's Penny rant:

    Hilarious.

Good idea OP! We have change jars in the kitchen and laundry room. We probably collect around $100 in change each year that we cash throughout for different things.

@Elizabeth we have always had one in the laundry room because FH is constantly leaving change in his pockets and I'm always finding them in the washer and dryer!

We're doing this. Especially since DH usually gets tipped with leftover change. We're hoping to save up so we can have a baby. We could afford one on our income, but at the perfect time for a baby FH wouldn't be able to work because he'll have to be student teaching (full days and no pay) for 3 months and I'd need leave of course. We're saving up for 6 months off of work for both of us so that we can have a baby with our support system around us (both friends/family and medical- I have lupus and birth is hard on the body)

It may seem silly, but we'll get to the 12,000 we need for living and baby costs eventually!

@Courtney Story of my life!! I've washed DH's wallet and ipod more times than I can count. That tiny touchscreen ipod mini has been through the wash at least 4 times (and I recently realized it was in his pocket after putting it in the washer and it got wet) and it still works! You would think I would learn to just check his pockets... but nope.

@Mrs. CK FH actually has one of those from when he was a kid but i think the counting part is broken. That is actually the jar in our laundry room we put the spare change in already! Just minus the lid.

We have an old plastic jar we throw change in from time to time. I wonder how much we could get if we were actively putting money in it...

@Tania & Jason I used to be terrible about that and then I started counting out the change. I'm not as good about it as i was a few years ago but I still try to. FH on the other hand never carries change and never uses it.

I've always wanted to do something like this; but I always use a credit card, so no change for me :[.

I saw a video of a guy who cashed in like 50 pounds of change and it was like 3 grand or something ridiculous. How awesome?!

My mom and I did this for a girl's vacation. We went away for 5 days, took the train, stayed in a more expensive hotel than we ever would have, and didn't worry about money once the whole time. We ended up having enough to cover the whole trip and have some left over. Granted, we saved for a few years but this is definitely a good idea for saving towards a goal, whether it be for the wedding, honeymoon, or a vacation/other expense after you're married!

Whenever I am at the grocery store and I've recently been paid (that part's definitely key...) I'll get change back like a 10 or 20 out from my debit and I've been slipping them into a cute piggy bank FH got me for my dress fund! I just started so not much there, but even if I only do it twice a month it will add up quick, hopefully!

I always do this! Not with a 2 litter, but same concept. Comes in handy! I cashed mine in in November for a trip though. Was about $100. Going to hope to get at least another $100 saved in change before honeymoon time.

FH and I have been saving "D" dollars for a little over a year and have about 448$ saved! Every time we get a dollar with the letter D on it we put it in our jar. It adds up pretty quickly, a great way to save for an upcoming trip! Smiley smile

We have a huge water bottle, like from the water coolers, in our dining room in the corner collecting all our change. It is nearly half full. I can only imagine how much is in there. FH puts a lot of $0.50 pieces in there from his trips to the poker room. We also have a jar that we put a $5.00 bill in every time we get one. No matter what, If you have a $5 it goes in the jar. We have paid for our wedding cake that way, and half of the photographer fees. It all adds up. Smiley smile After the wedding, we will continue to save this way.

Someone got us this at my Bridal Shower (my mom unfortunately separated envelopes from physical gifts so I still don't know who it was from). DH and I kept it by the door in our apartment and threw all of our change in it. We smashed it open when we got home from the honeymoon (we made a wish and smashed it together at the same time cuz we're dorks) and had almost $250 in it! I wish I knew where it came from cuz I think it's a super cute gift for an engagement party or shower.

ETA - I'm an idiot lol I just googled Terramundi and sure enough the pots came up. But excellent now I know where to get one for someone else hahaha.

We have a coffee can and when we come home from work or shopping we put the loose change in it. One month it totaled over $40!

Good for you guys! Hopefully it will add up fast.

We have a piggy bank we need to cash in...I know if you use one of those machines and put it on a gift card instead of cash they don't take a percentage out. So we may do that with like an Amazon giftcard.

FH and I are both very hard on ourselves, so we have a mason jar called the "be nice jar" and anytime we are mean to ourselves and beat ourselves up over something, we have to put a dollar in the jar. We've had the jar for about a year now and we definitely don't always put a dollar in when we should, but we have at least $100 in it now. Gonna use it for something fun for the two of us eventually. I really like the concept we came up with because not only does it save money, it also makes us more aware of when we're not cutting ourselves a break. Love the dimes idea too!
