Evening Wedding = Late Dinner

Jennifer, on October 5, 2015 at 9:58 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 6

My wedding starts at 7 pm because I have always dreamed of getting married at sunset; however, I feel bad that the dinner will not be served until 9:00 pm. The guests will be able to snack on platters of fresh fruit, vegetables, and cheeses before heading down to the reception, but I worry that I am going to have a bunch of hungry and annoyed guests. Am I just being paranoid?

I don't think you're being paranoid, it's a little later than normal for a wedding (but it is a Saturday, so that's okay!). But hopefully people will see the time on the invitation and consciously eat something before they come to the ceremony so they're not starving all the way through. If that doesn't happen, is there any way you could provide some light hors d'oeuvres beforehand?

Just be clear on your timeline to your guests and maybe go a little heavier on the Hors d'oeuvres and you should be fine.

I'm having a 7PM wedding as well and will definitely have more substantial appetizers for this reason. They will be hungry and fruit and veggies just don't cut it.

My cousin had her ceremony at 7 pm... catholic mass... so we didn't end up eating until after 9 and she had light Hors d'oeuvres, quiche is the only one I remember, but I ate a late lunch around 3 or 4 because I knew we wouldn't eat late. I think you will be fine as long as you have substantial cocktail hour! I LOVE evening weddings! Smiley smile Your guests should prepare for the late ceremony.... although hardly anyone does!!

I think that is pretty late. If I was invited to a wedding that late especially if I had to travel I would be a little peeved. I would also probably leave early since the party probably won't wind down until 1 or so. I agree that if the timeline is set in stone then have hearty hors d'oeuvres for everyone. Also is this a kid friendly wedding? If so you may have some families decline an invite because that is too late for their kids.

Guests going to a 7:00 wedding know that there is a ceremony and then a cocktail hour (in most cases) with food. It's pretty normal for an evening wedding, unless you start at 4:00....

Several of my couples have done cocktail hour (or part of it) first, then the ceremony, then dinner. It works out just fine.
