Europe Honeymoon Ideas

Jasmine, on September 24, 2020 at 2:48 PM Posted in Honeymoon 0 16
My fiancé and I are so excited to plan our honeymoon. However, since I am doing the bulk of our wedding planning I am leaving the honeymoon to him. We are getting married 4.22.2021 and would like to go on our honeymoon right after the wedding or sometime in May. Neither one of us have been to Europe and would love to go. We definitely want to relax on the beach, but still explore new cities. My fiancé wants to go to Spain and I really want to go to Italy, and we’re open to Greece. We will have 10 days of vacation time which I hope is plenty, but I don’t want to come back home exhausted from trying to squeeze too much in. Does anyone have any recommendations? Also is the Mediterranean warm enough in late April/May to enjoy the beach? Obviously this is all pending how travel will look in the spring. If Europe is a no go we will probably go to somewhere in the Caribbean.

I have not been to Spain, but it’s on my bucket list.
Italy is absolutely beautiful and tons to see, full of rich history and architecture.
Greece is hands down my favorite. Great walking tours in Athens, with bus tours to take you down to Cape Sunion and just about everywhere. Greece has architecture, history as well as beaches. I would NOT recommend drinking if you can avoid. I have driven all over the world and Greece scares me the most (even more than a one way road through the Alps in the winter).
You can’t go wrong with Europe. Maybe look at a travel tour that can take you to all three locations?

Greece would be the warmest of all 3, but still a bit cool to swim. All 3 have amazing history, culture and food. I would suggest only doing 1 country over 10 days as the whole airport process can be time consuming. In Italy you can travel by train, we did 5 cities in 2 weeks, fly in one way out the other. In Greece you can split your time between Athens and an Island. Most flights are no more than an hour. I don't know Spain well, but I'm sure you could visit a few regions in 10 days. You might also enjoy Croatia or Corsica.

Venice is about the most romantic place I have ever been (more so than Paris, in my opinion). Stay on the island - the real magic of the place is just wandering and getting totally lost in the lane ways and canals! It’s also close to the North Italy lakes which are gorgeous and will be beautiful in spring. I’d spend four or five days there and do one other place - any more than two places and you’ll spend the whole time in transit or in airports and train stations.

Covid may decide. At this point, change countries require to fly over, say by yourselves and order in food, and be there 10-14 days before you can step out and do anything. For some kinds of businesses you can get an exception, but not honeymoons.
And if 1 of you runs a fever, coughs, etc, you cannot get on a ship or plane to come home. You stay til it is over. You pay for your quarantine, too. And you may not have any health insurance to kick in. so set aside the cost of a week or two on intensive care. My niece and her FI are marrying here, but instead of touring they will fly off then quarantine 10-12 days required by the country, then spend the last 2 weeks of the month visiting family and sightseeing. And cleared it with work in case the have symptoms or test positive coming home, and ust wait an extra 2 weeks before going back to work.
You have time limits too short for that.

Spain, Italy, and Greece are farther apart than New York and New Orleans, so in 10 days, you might want to focus on one or two, instead of all three.

As Judith said, it's likely best to make plans you can change, as international travel may not be "normal" before late next year.

I would stick to cities or touristy areas, because, like Margaret said, driving in Europe is a whole different bag. Much narrower roads, for one.

May won't be great for beaches in Europe, unless you're super far south. (*London* is farther south than NYC, but colder. This always blows my mind. Yay, Gulf Stream!)

You can do a lot in 10 days, but if you're looking for a relaxing honeymoon, I'd make a choice between the beach vacation or a few cities to tour. If you did the cities, I'd just pick Italy or Spain, like... 2, maybe 3, cities, and see if you can find a travel agent who can do all that logistical work for you.

We definitely don’t have time to quarantine for 10-14 days. We can add an extra few days for vacation, but I definitely don’t want to spend all of my vacation time in isolation. When the time gets closer we will be choosing a place that doesn’t have a quarantine requirement.

Yes we definitely would stick to one country, but it’s so hard to decide. But if it’s too cool to swim and enjoy the beach we may have to think about waiting until the summer.

That sounds wise. Don't get your hopes up for one place.

For a beach, Greece is amazing! We spent five days in Santorini with Athens on either side--it's also where we got engaged! I know people like island hopping but to relax in 10 days I might only do one change. The ferries eat up a lot of time. Also note that Santorini has volcanic rock beaches but the water is aaaamazing.
Italy is a favorite of ours and Florence is our #1 for it's walkability, beauty, art, and wine! Although we haven't been, I'd look for the Amalfi coast if you want beach. Venice is great, but you have to travel for a beach and even then they're not impressive. It will also probably be cold. I'd stay south so you're warm that early in the spring.
If you want Spain, my friends like the islands that are west. Not Malta. It'll be warm that time of year and really beautiful. My friends go to surf.I hope you'll make it over here to Europe in April!!! I am also hoping for the best for travel because otherwise our wedding in the States won't be possible either. 🙏

Mid-May beginning of June should be warm enough. If you really can't decide, a flight from Rome to Barcelona is about 2hrs and costs $60 end of May 2021 per person. So you could always split your time. If not I

Oops, If not I suggest Italy as a first time in Europe. It is truly amazing and so easy and inexpensive to travel around.

Thanks everyone for your great suggestions! My biggest concern, beyond if we are even able to visit without having to quarantine is, will we be able to go on tours? Especially if we choose Italy considering how hard they got hit, I can see it being very restricted with good reason, but I really don’t want to miss out on visiting certain attractions.

I honestly wouldn't begin planning or buying any tickets until after the new year. I promise you 2-3 months is still well in advance and you'll probably get a better rate at the 3-month mark versus purchasing now.

Also, waiting until after the new year will allow you see what restrictions (if any) will be in place regarding Covid. Who knows, there may be a vaccine ready for us.

I'd definitely find a travel agent to help you book your honeymoon as they can get you special deals and extras because it's your honeymoon. Not to mention they can probably give you a little more information.

What kind of tours are you looking to do? Everything is very accessible, so I never go on tours, find them too constrictive. That's me though. There are your groups operating with limited spots available, at least in Greece (was there 10 days ago). Really, you have to decide on your absolute 'must see' activities. If you want to go to the Vatican buy regular tickets online and go on your own. If you want to sail around the Greek islands join a tour.
