Etsy jewelry warning!

Brittany, on November 4, 2020 at 1:48 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 1 24
Hi all, I purchased a wedding band from an Etsy shop 3 months ago. I’d advise anyone who also does this, to take the ring to a local jeweler and have it looked at to ensure good craftsmanship. I didn’t do this and noticed a month after the wedding I’d already lost a stone. I took the ring to a jeweler and they said all the prongs have to be remade because they were made entirely too short to hold a stone for as long as it should. The repairs cost almost as much as the ring itself and I’m kicking myself for not just getting the band from the jeweler my engagement ring came from because I was trying to save FH money :/ my ring should be fixed and ready by the end of this week so yay!!

This is honestly why I have never bought jewelry on Etsy. Literally anyone can make an Etsy account, and you never know the quality of the craftsmanship or even if they are using real gold/gemstones until after you purchase. I've also seen tons of fake reviews. My SIL's wife actually purchased a wedding band from Etsy from a seller in a different country and has not been able to get it for months because it's stuck in customs or something.

Yes! It is so risky ordering from shops on Etsy! There’s no way to tell if the jewelry is made from high-quality products, or that you will even receive the item. You can’t even trust reviews, because I know lots of Etsy shops pad their reviews. There are many horror stories out there of engagement rings purchased through Etsy shops that later find out the diamond isn’t even real. The safest bet is always to go to a local, accredited jeweler.

Ugh that sucks!! I hope she gets it!! Luckily they were able to confirm the diamonds are real and it’s truly 18k white gold but I definitely learned a lesson!

That's great news though! I'm sorry the quality was shoddy, but at least the materials are real!

I agree with this completely. It sucks that you wasted money but at least you know for the future just to stick to a jewelry shop.

We were wanting to do the same thing to save us some money on my wedding bands, but after looking at a few, we decided against it. We're looking at Gorjana now, and will probably go with them!

I'm so sorry you had to go through that, especially when Etsy was supposed to save money, not cost more!

I'm sorry that you're dealing with this, but also want to chime in to say not all Etsy made items are like this. My engagement ring and wedding bands both came from a store on Etsy and after 2 years of daily wear, my engagement ring still looks brand new, with no stone issues (it's only been a little over a month for the bands, but they're doing great as well). I would definitely encourage anyone who is considering Etsy to make sure they thoroughly check the reviews both on and off-site before making a purchase. Again, I'm sorry you're having to deal with shoddy craftsmanship, but I'm glad your ring will be good to go at the end of the week!

I’m so glad you lucked out on Etsy!! All the reviews from this particular shop led me to believe all was good.. so reviews can’t always be trusted unfortunately

Ugh. That's super frustrating. I'm glad it's all working out for you, however!

I'm sorry this happened to you. However, I agree you should have purchased the ring from a reputable jeweler. Etsy is not a jewelry store and I would never think to buy something off of there that is so important.

This is why purchasing from a reputable seller with hundreds of positive reviews and pictures is so important.

    Good warning!

Etsy is great for inexpensive/costume pieces, but unless you know how to verify gemstones it would definitely be good to be cautious. I'm glad you caught the issue before you lost more stones.

I did get a "backup" engagement ring from Etsy when I needed to have mine resized and wasn't sure what size to get. My ring was a size 7 and I ended up needing it resized to around a 6, but the jewelers I took it to recommended 5.75 which made me worried I wouldn't be able to take it off when needed. I ended up buying two $30 rings from Etsy in a size 6 and size 5.75 and tried them both, on hot days and cold days, when I had my period and after eating salty foods, etc to get a better idea of what size was best for me, and opted for having my ring resized to a 6, which has been perfect. I now use the "backup" rings on days where I want something a little dressier than my silicone ring (which I wear most of the time) but don't want to wear my actual e-ring and wedding band, such as if I'm traveling or need to switch from looking nice to something more practical and don't have a safe place to store my expensive rings.

I'm sorry you have to deal with that. I know how buying from a business online is not always the best and most money saving route. I bought a wedding dress online and after 6 months of not receiving it and going back and forth with the company, I filed a claim with PayPal and got my money back thankfully.

I love Etsy and have a shop of my own, but yeah I'd definitely be careful buying jewelry on there! There's lots of cute options, but most of them aren't going to last long under continuous use.

Sorry you’re dealing with this! Luckily not all Etsy shops are like this. My fiancé purchased my engagement ring from one and it’s wonderful! No issues. A local jeweler complimented the craftsmanship and beauty of it. Hopefully everything works out for you!

I stopped ordering off Etsy. I made about 25 purchases off Etsy this year... 5 never made it to me - and the owners argued with me. I found one package at a local post office saying I had to pay $4.40 to have my package because the owner who offered “free shipping” didn’t have correct postage on it, and I have received cheap/fraud looking items. Anyone can make an Etsy shop; so definitely go with only 5 star ratings. Also, purchased a just married shirt $30 that had stains on it - well due to covid and postponing my wedding, I didn’t open the box for two months this and when I wrote the owner he never responded and I couldn’t leave a review after 30 days. Super sketchy experiences.

Exactly what I did. Both my band and engagement ring came from Etsy and I love them so much. I only had to take my ring in to get it resized as it was too big when we bought it. They said I needed to be careful because of how the prongs were made but my stone stays secure. The only thing that is annoying are that the prongs get stuck on everything. Other than that my experiences have been great. I bought other jewelry for my wedding off etsy. A necklace and clip on earrings since I can't wear real ones. Those have been great too. I just really did my homework before I comitted.
