Etiquette for wine and beer glasses

Deirdre, on March 26, 2019 at 11:59 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 9
We will be renting our glasses and dinnerware for reception as well as for the bar. It is being catered buffet style and will be including a champagne toast. Each table setting will have a glass champagne flute and water glass with plate and flatware.

My question is when someone goes to the bar for a beer (served by my bartender from a keg) or poured a glass of wine what is the etiquette on asking them to keep their glass to reuse if they want another round? Both our families are down to earth, no frills, but just trying to figure out how many glasses to rent, and a 60 cents a glass, it adds up! I expect about 100 guests, but probably only 50 or so drinkers. I plan to have back up plastic cups if needed. Ideas and suggestions welcomed!

Not sure how you would let your guests know that. Do you have anyone clearing your tables for you? Perhaps they could quickly wash them and put them back behind the bar for use?

Don't forget you'll need glasses for the non-drinkers too if you're serving soda, tea or any other non-alcoholic beverages. I'd probably estimate 4-6 glasses per person on the high side, knowing that sometimes people forget where they put their glass down.

Thanks. I thought of having a little sign on the bar, that says save your glass. Guests will have their water glass refilled at the table by the servers, and if they want to use that glass for the sweet or unsweet tea which will be at the buffet line. I think I will have extra glasses available at the iced tea carafe. But just trying to figure out how many beer and wine glasses to rent for the bar specifically.

I personally don't think this is okay, what if they wanted to switch up from red to white or the other way around you'd make them use the same glass? or if they want a different brand of beer you're better off going to costco and buying disposable cups then making someone use the same glass all night.

I agree with this. I usually drink something different with dinner than I do the rest of the evening so I definitely wouldn’t be ok reusing my glass.

Thanks for the feedback. Seems like the 4 glasses per person is going to be what we will use.

I disagree with PPs. There is nothing wrong with asking your guests to reuse their glasses, and I've attended weddings where they did. Just put up a little sign that says "your glass for the night, for whatever tastes right." I would suggest having it at the bar where the glasses will be displayed, BUT if you plan to have the glasses on the tables then I'd put mini signs on each table or a card inside the glasses.

I usually always reuse my glass when possible, mostly because I do not like waste. That being said, if I would like to switch drinks, I would want a new glass. I would suggest requesting guests reuse their glass with a small sign at your bar, but also ordering a few extra for those who wish to switch things up. So if you have 50 guests drinking alcohol, maybe order 75-80 glasses. Having the wait staff quickly wash and restock the glasses is also a great idea.

Thanks, it's nice to know others have gone this direction. I am a bit of resuse recycle hippie type, and my side and his know this. And my fiance, is like forget it let's just do red solo cups and honestly my family and his would probably just go with it! Lol.

We are doing all disposable cups/plates/flatware. They will be of good quality, but my wedding is expensive enough without having to rent glass & real china. I personally don't see anything wrong with red solo cups if that is what y'all wanted to do, lol. Like you said, y'all are down to earth so y'all should let your wedding reflect that.
