Etiquette for cash instead of boxed gifts

Hi all, I am new on here and I have read many good comments and advice. It's good to still see some honest opinions. By the way, I have a profile picture up but for some reason it still shows the two ring avatar. Hopefully it updates soon. Can anyone please tell me if it's rude to tell your guests...

Hi all,

I am new on here and I have read many good comments and advice. It's good to still see some honest opinions. By the way, I have a profile picture up but for some reason it still shows the two ring avatar. Hopefully it updates soon.

Can anyone please tell me if it's rude to tell your guests via the invitation card that you will rather have cash than any boxed gifts?

My wedding is in September and we (fiancé and I) just sent out our wedding invitations (using The Knot). However, we are able to add more details to it at anytime. What do you think is appropriate and not tacky?

Thank you all!

Please don't ask for money! Create a small registry, people will get the hint.

My mind is so jumbled with all the craziness of today's forum as well as the alarm system for my apartment building squealing for 6.5 HOURS after the power went out... So my short-term memory can't process if this has been mentioned or not, but if you do decide to add a registry (a registry. NOT a honeyfund or the like), make sure its existence is made known by word of mouth, through family/close friends/BMs. Not cool to put it on the invite like "gimme gimme!!!"

Hi Mercy. Don't ask for $$$ in any way. Don't have it printed anywhere. Congrats and best wishes!

No, no, no...it's no more appropriate to ask for cash for your wedding than it is to ask for cash for your birthday. You just don't.

A small registry is fine. Some will use it, and some won't. Some will buy you gifts that are not on your registry, and some won't. Some will give you cash, and some won't. Whatever you receive, consider each one a wedding gift and be thankful. There is never a polite way to ask for cash unless you're submitting tax returns, signing documents, and paying interest on what you borrowed.

So I'm confused. You sent your e-STDs yesterday or the actual invites & RSVP cards yesterday? If you already sent the invites with your request for cash on them, isn't it a little too late to be asking this question? If you haven't yet, don't. Like everyone else has said, it's very rude to do so.

I didn't ask for money on my invites, I didn't feel comfortable with it. I'm glad I felt weird about it because just reading everyone's comments, it really is weird and rude! Thanks guys!!

& Keri M, I sent my actual invites yesterday and not my e-STDs

Hi mercy, and welcome. Smiley smile

If you guys truly don't want any gifts, just don't create a registry. If people ask where you're registered, just a simple "We don't have a registry" will suffice.

Think though, about how nice it might be to have some updated/upgraded towels or sheets. If you create a small registry, you may still get a few nice items, but mostly cash.

Yes it's rude to put anything in reference to gifts in the invite. It's better spread by word of mouth. We will have a small registry at bed bath and beyond and I told my mom to tell people we will have that or we'd like Sam's or Costco gift cards since they will probably ask her instead of me directly. We will have a bird cage at the reception where guests can put cards if they brought them.

I wouldn't say don't have a registry, unless you want to get a bunch of weird, useless stuff.

Wait, but also don't put your registry on your invitations! (Sorry if someone said that, I didn't see it!)
