Escort cards for dating and gay couples?

Lori, on November 14, 2019 at 9:18 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 9

I'm doing escort cards for couples and families to save time/space/hassle. Basically letting the couple/family know which table they are at.

But what about dating couples? One card or two?

And what about a gay married couple who have different last names? Do I put both names on the escort card? And then which letter do I alphabetize that under?

If straight married couples are going on one card then married same sex couples should also go in the same card. Last name doesn’t matter. “Mr Smith & Mr Jones” or “Mrs Smith & Mrs & Jones”. Every married couple should be treated the same.

I agree with you! I just don’t have any situations where straight married couples have different last names. So I wasn’t sure which last name to file it under. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Giving everyone their own escort card would be significantly easier and cause much less confusion. If you’re truly set on doing one card per household, I would put each name on the card and alphabetize it under who in the family/couple you’re closest with. For example, if we went to a wedding for my FW’s cousin, it would be under her last name, not mine. I definitely don’t think this is the best way to do it though.

I would just go alphabetically. As far as dating couples, I would put that mans first, or if it’s a same sex couple, alphabetical again. This will also help save you some paper putting them together 🙂

Good question. What do you do about & guest if you’re giving each person a card? Do you require the guest’s name at the time of RSVP?

Yes, that’s why there’s a line for names on RSVP cards.

We aren’t doing RSVP cards (we
will be doing online), many RSVP cards only include a number not a space for names, and honestly before seeing this I wasn’t too concerned about asking who my single friends were bringing. My single friends with plus ones can bring who they choose, I don’t need them to have to choose 1-2 months out.

I agree the straight or gay couples with different last names would be harder to find as a couple. If we keep everyone as the “closer” friend in the alphabetization and go with couple cards - there are plenty where we are equally close to both, so that would be awkward as well.I feel that people only look for their last name or their own card, I think we will go with a mix of couple, family, single names, and friend & guest depending on the situation. To me it’s definitely not a question of dating or married/gay or straight, but we have guests in all categories who have chosen different options with last names. Seems like one of those questions that will vary based on your relationship with each guest and their decision on names, but if you’re concerned about singling anyone out, I’d look for the solution that works best not to do so - good ideas earlier if you’re closer to one person or want to ask for names for plus ones.

Also thanks for posting & thanks to all who answered. I really appreciate the posts on here that make me think about something I wouldn’t have before & then make a decision for myself. Hope I wasn’t hijacking the thread!

Treat all your guests the same. If you are doing escort cards for some units, you should do them for all units, including couples that are unmarried and/or have different last names. If a unit doesn't share a last name, literally just pick one of the names and file under that. As long as all the names associated with that setting appear on the actual escort cards, I promise you your guests will figure it out.
