Envelope - asking for money

MG, on May 7, 2015 at 2:28 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 25

I follow a few wedding blogs, and just saw a post about a site called Envelope. Apparently, they have taken the next step past honeymoon registries, and now you ask directly for cash. I think the way it works is that you register for gifts, guests can either give you part of the gift or the full gift, but instead of getting the gift in the mail, you get a check. The site then specifies you can spend the money on anything you would like, so basically you have fake registry items.

The tag line is "Asking for money just got easy" and discusses how awkward it is to ask for money. I actually was thinking the whole site was a joke but it seems legit. Oh, and the people purchasing pay a small fee. It's in Australia only for now it seems. I'm pretty indifferent on honeymoon registries but for some reason this just seems absolutely ridiculous.

Tacky. If you want money don't register and hope you get cash.

Honeymoon registries are basically fake too though... You don't really have to use it for a "couples massage" or "candlelight dinner" or "horseback ride" since you just get the money. I honestly don't mind, but I hate thinking I could just send the couple a check if that's what they want instead of paying a third party to help us pretend what it is for.

Oh boy. That's absurd. I had never even heard of "the envelope" until getting engaged to my very Italian FH. FMIL just keeps saying things like "they won't come but they'll send the envelope" or "we'll invite them because they'll bring a big envelope" and I'm like WHAT?!

We have a honeymoon registry, but we actually do plan on using any money we get for it on exactly what the giver specifies from the registry. This seems way wacked out, though.

Who was that user who bragged about her husband's brand new BMW in one breath then turned around and complained about paying for an open bar with the other breath? I remember she had one of these.

I saw something similar, but I can't remember the site name. It was months ago. You make a registry. You click on an item, like a toaster. You say how much the toaster is and how many you want. Then guests can either pay the total or put a certain amount towards the toaster. The couple receives cash to "purchase" the toaster on their own.

God, that's gross. Asking for money just got easy but it's still tasteless.

Wow. I'd rather someone ask for cash straight up through an awful poem than flat out lie.
