Char, on December 28, 2013 at 11:05 AM Posted in Planning 0 18

HELP!! Looking for ideas to entertain guests after ceremony and before /during dinner. I'm only having 25-30 guests so difficult to do a DJ or something, and of course I'm on a budget.

Ideas PLEASE

We're doing an iPod set up to play music during the reception, you could do something like that if you just want background music.

I rented a sound system and hooked up and iPod. My MOH volunteered her BF to operate it. It was 80 for the entire weekend.

We had 65 people at our wedding, and I'm really glad we didn't spend money on a DJ. The iPod and sound system worked just fine.

We are having a small wedding too, but i still hired a dj. Only because when I started working on the playlists for the i-pod i got extremely aggravated. In addition, I couldnt think of anyone that was willing to be responsible for playing the music for both the ceremony and reception. We are getting married out of town so everyone is travelling, and it was just easier to have our vendor recommend someone to do all of that for us. On top of being in grad school and having to find time to sign my daughter up for kindergarten, i didnt need the extra headache of putting playlists together! But if it wasnt for that, I would be doing an ipod and sound system too!

We are also having a small wedding no more than 60 people I have been debating about a DJ but SO expensive! I am however looking for a caricaturist to draw everyone, which will be our entertainment. I love the idea of everyone getting to take home a sketch.

That makes a lot of sense... just have this fear of guests being bored, nothing worse than a boring reception.....lol. Has anyone used interactive games, I've gotten mixed reviews

Ok, a few ideas and it's up to you to judge the cheesiness factor:

    - magician

    - caricaturist

    - impersonator(s)

    - psychic(s) if that's not offensive to you

    - photo booth (DIY or not)

    - string quartet from a local music school

    - local tenors from a music school or church

    Just a few ideas...

Yes boring receptions are the worst! That was another thing that influenced my decision.... plus our wedding is on a Monday night so i saved a lot on the dj. We are paying 650 for him to do the ceremony, cocktail and reception and uplighting to the venue.

And since an open bar is included in our package, i figure it doesnt matter what songs he plays because all music is great when drunk. lol

Hi. Congratulations on your upcoming wedding. We are a professional DJ company and I strongly suggest hiring a professional for your most special day, regardless of the number of guests. With that said, we do have other options for you.

    1. We offer Live Musicians. Cello, Violin, Harp or Piano (piano must be onsite). There is nothing more personal than a live musician playing your favorite tunes.

    2. We offer a rental sound system. This way, if you want to have that iPod wedding (although we strongly suggest having a professional mix your music), you will still need a decent speaker system. What we offer is a fully contained system that you plug in your iPod, mp3 player or computer. We offer both the option for you to pick up or for us to fully set it up for you.

Hopefully, these options will work for you. Please let us know if you have any questions.

You should definitely hook up an ipod for background music and then what about games? Apples to Apples is an awesome party game, as is CatchPhrase!

I've also seen the idea of a karaoke reception! Or a just dance reception on the Wii! Games would be great too. And as background music, you can just have pandora playing instead of making playlists (but subscribe to it for at least a month, you don't want to hear the commercials.)

An iPod is great for maybe your cocktail hour, better yet an iPad with DJay software. I would venture to say the experience would be much better for your guests though with a live DJ, especially during reception. iPods can't take requests and song transitions/genres sometimes need to switch it up. Many of us DJ's now offer credit card and financing options through programs like "Bill Me Later" so I don't see budget being a major factor in a once-in-a-liftetime event. I have seen wedding dresses that cost more than our entire fee. Best of luck. ~DJ Bobby Freedom

Most people have a cocktail hour in between the ceremony with drinks and appetizers. I've found that most of the time old family/friends are together and they just want to chat then anyways. I don't think you have to do anything but I know during my cocktail hour I had a mariachi band come and play songs (we got married in Mexico).
