Entertainment during cocktail hour

Jerrica, on May 27, 2021 at 1:31 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 15
Hello! I am not sure if I am overthinking things or not. We are planning a smaller wedding with only close friends and family, roughly 40 people. We will be married at a church and are having a dinner at a hall a few minutes away. There will be catering and a bar. During cocktail hour we plan to have a photo booth and since about 10 of our guests are under the age of 10 and our wedding is close to Christmas we are going to have a Christmas tree with one individual gift for each child to unwrap and play with during cocktail hour. So there will be a bar, some hors d'oeuvre, a make-your-own hot chocolate bar, the tree with gifts, and the photo booth. There will be music played via Bluetooth but we aren't really doing dancing. Is this enough to keep my guests entertained while we do photo's? I'd hate to leave them bored.

This sounds like an amazing time! I love the hot chocolate bar and you are perfectly fine on entertainment. If anything, hire Santa Claus to come by and say hi! That would really cap off your cocktail hour.

Yes, that's more than enough. Cocktail hours typically have appetizers and drinks with light music in the background for ambiance. Guests typically mingle and chat amongst themselves, catching up and talking about how lovely the ceremony was. Even at weddings that had photo booths, I've only ever seen them at the reception rather than the cocktail hour.

You can also see if there are any Christmas carolers available if you are really concerned about entertainment. Sometimes you can find highschool / college groups that are more affordable.

I mean you could always hire like a Lyra performer or something if your venue is tall enough and allows it. We thought about this at the beginning of planning, but then once Covid hit and everything happened it was the last thing we were concerned with. I really think an hour goes by really quickly especially with food and drinks and socializing. I think everything that you have will be enough entertainment for them

People love the Christmas spirit! Either way, carolers or not - your entertainment is great. Are you having assigned seats for dinner? You can also decorate Christmas ornaments with names and table numbers for your seating chart. Hang them on the tree with the presents.

Since we will only be doing dinner and cake I figured the photo booth would have to be during the cocktail hour so everyone doesn't feel they need to rush eating lol.

    That sounds awesome!

The only thing I would be worried about is kids misplacing their gifts or them possibly getting stolen by an unruly kid unless they are all the same.

I was trying to get live performers but so far many are skeptical to book with COVID still lingering.

Woo! Thanks everyone! I'm feeling better now. I will definitely look into the live music/singing but still feel confident that if it doesn't work out we should be ok.

This is such a cute idea!
Carolers would be a cute touch, but by no means necessary. I think you have plenty to keep everyone entertained for an hour!

This is totally enough! People will chat and mingle and snack. As long as it's not more than an hour this is all you need!

That’s plenty. If there are drinks and snacks, your guests will be entertained. I had lawn games set up for our cocktail hour but people really only cared about the drinks and snacks anyway!

Yes, this is more than enough. Most guests are entertained enough by just socializing with other guests. So what you’ve planned sounds great!
