Engagement Ring Scare!!!

Samantha, on August 1, 2019 at 8:12 AM Posted in Community Conversations 0 7
First, I just want to put it out there that I have never been a jewelry girl. Never wore a ring before engagement. Don’t do bracelets/necklaces. Even wearing earrings is rare for me. That being said.... I get low key anxiety when I think about being responsible for such a valuable item.

Anyways, two days ago I was getting ready for a date with FH and realized I should probably shave my legs haha. So I quickly hop in the shower and I leave my ring on. Side note: I am a flight attendant so when I leave on 3 day trips and I’m sleeping/showering in hotels in random cities... I NEVER take my ring off. Again, the thought of forgetting it in the hotel gives me anxiety. Point being... it’s not uncommon for me to shower with my ring on. Well I get in and I’m about to lather some shave cream on my legs and see my ring. My thought process is, “Well I’m home so even if I forget this ring in this shower... it’s still my home.” So I take it off and set it on a ledge. Biggest mistake ever. I think it should also be mentioned that I was on a speakerphone call with my sister who moved across the country. With the time difference, I decided to catch up with her while I was getting ready including when I was in the shower. I think I should also mention that I was showering in a walk-in shower with the big drain in the middle. I should also mention that the cover to that drain came off and we haven’t yet replaced it. So we’re talking about a huge drain with a pretty big hole. I’m sure you can guess what happened when I bumped into my ring that was sitting on the ledge.

LUCKILY, my sister was on the phone and heard me freaking out and immediately told me to turn off the water, which if I hadn’t been on the phone I would’ve forgotten to do. I obviously get out start freaking out and crying. While I’m calling out for FH to come save the day (like he does for everything) I’m googling how to get the ring back. And the end of the article it says “if this doesn’t work file an insurance claim as it’s gone.”

Anyways long story long ... as per the googles search advice, we used a wet vac to suck up what was in the drain and got my baby back! My FH looked down the drain and saw it beforehand and could see it was stuck on a glob of washed down hair. It was disgusting to be pulled out of that vacuum canister, but I was so relieved I didn’t care. I soaked that bad boy in vodka, and we were luckily able to still make our date plans work.

Three things were set in stone that day
1. I just don’t care what products I get on my ring. It’s just staying on.
2. FH is finally going to replace that drain cover I’ve been asking about for months lol.
3. Sisters never stop saving your life even from thousands of miles away.

Has anybody else had any traumatic things happen to them with their engagement ring or am I alone ?!

My grandmother had that happen when she first got married, called a plumber to chop the kitchen sink up to get it back and my grandfather installed covers on everything he could after that. 🤣 You are not alone.
But we all live in my grandparents house so luckily grandma was the last one. My mother managed to slam her hand in a car door, have her diamond fall out of her ring, it was a blizzard, and still find her diamond and put it back in a new setting. She made me look for it. After that one I am very delibrate with my jewelry.

I always took mine off once I got home but I always put it in a designated place to remember it. I only wear my wedding band now and it's just a plain tungsten no frills to it. as my e ring made me too conscious of the gems and everything. I was always afraid of losing or or scratching it or anything

Oh man, that's definitely scary. I'm a little afraid of something like that happening, so I kind of do the opposite - my ring goes in a little dish before I shower or go to bed, and I also have a place in the kitchen to put it when I'm doing something where would get gross or be annoying.

OMG this must have been so awful. Mine fell in the sink the other day while I was taking it off to be safe.. the irony..(luckily I caught it before it got to the drain...) so I can't imagine it going all the way down!!

I ALWAYS take mine off before the shower and before I do dishes. I have a ring dish on the counter in the bathroom and in the kitchen and I put it there for safe keeping until I'm done. It's not about keeping soap off, it's so my soapy fingers don't let it slip. It's just not worth the risk.

Oh my gosh, I can feel and understand your panic! I lost my ring once. My FW and I worked together at a warehouse at the time, and I would take my ring off everyday and stick it on the shelf in my work locker just so it didn’t get damaged. I always made sure to put it back on before we left work. Well one day, we were on our way home from work and stopped at Taco Bell (random but significant detail). We get home and I noticed that my ring wasn’t on my finger. And my immediate thought was “Shoot, I left it in my locker at work.” I worked the following day, so it was no biggie. I could just get it then. But when we got to work the next day, the ring was nowhere to be found. It wasn’t in my locker, it hadn’t been turned in, I was seriously freaking out. I was asking EVERYBODY if they’d seen it. And then I thought about the Taco Bell, and how in my state of overworked hunger, I’d been rummaging through the bag for my food.

I lost my ring in the dang Taco Bell bag. 😂😂

Oh my goodness, I would've cried too! One time I took off my ring at FH's apartment when I was there alone. I left, locked the door, and realized I didn't have the ring! FH had only recently moved in to that apartment, but I had the backup key. Maybe it's cause I'm dumb, but I couldn't get the door open, even with the key! I wrestled with the door for about five minutes by the time I figured it out and found my ring inside

Not my engagement ring, as the one I’m currently wearing cost $9 xD. But I almost lost a ring of significant personal value. I’ve had the ring for 10 years, my best friend bought it for me as a gift and I’ve worn it every day of my life for those 10 years until I retired it last week. I was wearing it as a stand in engagement ring until we can afford my actual ring, and when I decided to try on CZ rings to at least get something that looks like an engagement ring from a distance, I left it on the display in Walmart after trying on rings. Luckily it’s super bent out of shape (from being waaaay too big for my ring finger so I had to squeeze it, it’s striking silver and wasn’t a solid band so it was bendable.) so it didn’t have any value to anyone else, and I realized I didn’t have it as I was getting into my car. I ran back inside, and it was sitting right where I left it. Now it’s sitting in a place of honor in my jewelry box.
