Engagement ring resized, and came back looking horrible

Chloe, on April 10, 2018 at 1:57 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 20
Sorry if this is posted in the wrong discussion group, but I didn't really see one that fit my issue. My fiancé and I got engaged February 3rd. Barely over 2 months ago. Anyway, he purchased a beautiful white and rose gold, 3-stone, braided ring, with little diamonds down two of the shanks at Kays. He purchased insurance on it, and the package included sizing. Anyway, I finally took it in for them to send out a week ago, and it came back today, and I was happy at first because it was originally supposed to take 2 weeks instead of one. Well, the ring looks terrible. A few of the small dimonds down the shank are crooked, and, even worse, the rose gold looks like its scratched and wore. They didn't even bother to clean or polish it, and it certainly did not look even close to that terrible condition when I took it off of my finger to be sent out!! There is also visible soldering near the mount that wasn't there before, and it overall appears slightly crooked. I'm absolutely disgusted, and I'm taking it back tomorrow. To be honest, I have no confidence in having it sent out againSmiley sad Has anyone had similar experiences with Kays after getting their new engagment ring resized? Is it worth having them try again, or should we ask for a refund? I'd be really unhappy about not having the same main diamond that he proposed with, but I don't really trust them to do anymore work. Any suggestions or experiences? I'm so upset.

I honestly don't have any good advice for you but I'm following this post. My ring is from Jared and I'm so scared to have it resized because of the horror stories I've heard.

Resizing can be very difficult. I would take it to an actual trusted real jeweler to have it properly sized. That is awful that happened to you! I would go back and complain for sure.

I had mine resized through Jared -- no problems at all! My husband also had his wedding ring resized a few weeks after the wedding with no issue.

The exact same thing happened to a friend of mine. Hers is a solitaire and when it came back the stone was off-center! The shank wasn’t a perfect circle anymore. I think they are still fighting with them over it.

Take it to a local jeweler and have them fix it, even if it costs you more money.

I had an absolutely horrible sizing job done to a ring several years back so when I got my engagement ring and it was slightly to big I decided against have it resized and just got the clear wraps for it. No one sees them unless I have my hand turned over and they prevent it from sliding off or rolling around my finger. Also, living in the South with the humidity my fingers swell off and on in the heat so sometimes its hard to get my ring off when I am outside for a long time.

I got my ring resized at Jared’s and my fiancé didn’t even get my ring from there but they were nothing but nice & my ring was done the next morning (I dropped it off just before close the day before.) I was nervous too after reading the reviews of my local Jared’s but overall I had a great experience.

My ring is from Kays. I needed it resized, but I was so worried about the diamonds on the band that I instead had them special make me one (for free) in the right size. I haven't had any issues and the brand new ring actually came back more sparkly. If you don't get refunded or don't want a completely new design, maybe having them special make you one is an option.

I'm very nervous for when I have to send it off. Currently trying to break FH of his chain jewelry store habits... He bought it without telling my mom, otherwise she would have immediately sent him to our family friend jeweler.

Jared does their work in-house and sizing takes at the most a few days, and your ring never leaves the store.

OP, I'm so sorry that your ring is in such bad shape after resizing. What did they say when you pointed it out to them?

My ring isn't from Kay's and we've always had resizing done by a local jeweler. I've had my ring resized twice and both times it came back looking perfect.

Did you say anything when they handed it back to you? I would have spoken up right away if something wasn't right. The second time I had my e-ring resized, it felt a little big. I hadn't had it on my finger for 30 seconds before I asked the jeweler if he thought it still looked to big, and we talked immediately about fixing it. My advice is in the future, don't leave with the ring if you're unhappy with what's been done. Speak up right away to let them know you're not satisfied. If you leave without saying anything, they'll think there was no problem at all.

Do you have pictures of your ring before you took it in for resizing that would show the condition of the ring prior to bringing it in to them for work? That might help show them you're telling the truth.

I've never worked with Kay's, but I've seen a lot of posts on WW that talk about issues with them. Specifically, they've been in trouble for switching out diamonds to diamonds of lesser quality when rings come in for service.

I would definitely go back in to your Kay's and point out what you've noticed about the ring and see what your options with them are. I might also take it to an independent, local jeweler and ask then to appriasie your ring as it is now, especially if you or your FH have the specs of your ring from when it was purchased. If Kay's offers a solution you're happy with, I would let this be the last time you deal with them and instead take your ring to a reputable local jeweler for future maintenance.

Definitely go back and let them know you are not happy with the quality of their resizing. You should not be able to tell that it has been resized when you receive it! Once they fix it I would suggest not leaving until you have inspected it and are okay with the results!

My FH gave me his grandmothers bridal set from 1944, he had it resized 4 sizes up then split apart (both pieces were soldered together) I really cannot tell that it was ever a different size at all, even with that big of a jump! (he had my ring done at zales btw)

If they are worth their salt then they will realize you are unhappy with it and correct their mistakes!

Honestly my experience with Kay’s was HORRIBLE. I didn’t need it resized, but two weeks after I got it I lost a stone. It the took them ten weeks (and multiple mistakes like replacing a smokey quartz with a diamond-one is dark brown one is clear so who knows how that even happened) for them to send it back. When I got it back, the new stone was MUCH larger than the five it was supposed to match. I couldn’t go more than 2-3 days without loose stones and after all of this crap they offered us a $100 gift card that I’ll never use because they are horrible. I ended up having to take my ring to a local jeweler to be basically remade because they didn’t include enough prongs to keep the stones in (it was a custom piece). This cost me $1100!!!!! The local jeweler made an entirely new ring (aside from my stones) in 13 days which is amazing considering the 10 weeks Kays took to replace a flippin stone. Never again! I’d complain and ask that the warranty be refunded and then find a local jeweler.

My ring is from Jared too. I got mine back from being resized yesterday and it was too small so I had to send it back again. Listen to your gut when picking out a size. When I looked at my ring it looked fine! I will let you know my experience when I completely get it back again on Saturday

Even though it's a sister store of Kays, I've actually heard good things about re-sizing at Jared's. If you got there, I hope it goes perfectly!!

Okay, so here is what has happened so far: I returned the next day to another Kays store within the area, since the one I was dealing with had horrible customer service. I explained everything...the tool marks, the disappearance of much of my rose gold...and they really only told me (even with insurance) that it could only be sent out again, or an entire new ring (new diamonds) could be ordered. I said, no, I want my dimonds placed into a new, same style setting. I figured since the insurance covers changing the setting that this would be no big deal since the company messed up and did a sloppy job (which they admitted to), but they came up with every excuse as to why they can't do that (I was speaking to a manager) and on top of it told me that, even using the completely different setting option, only my main diamond could be used ( I have 3 MAIN diamonds) I said, well I didn't know then, and that I would have to talk it over with my fiancé. Well, I was so upset, I took it to another unrelated jewler, had them look the ring over and explained what had happened at Kays. They said there was no reason for my ring to have come back like that, and that they either overused rhodium, which covered my rose gold, or it was wearing wayy quicker than it ever should have, and that store policy is what dictates putting my diamonds into the new setting. I was told I was better off calling corporate to get what I needed done. The next day my fiancé spoke to them, and they gave in a bit, and said my ring could be re-cast and my original diamonds used, but they couldn't guarentee the quality (diamonds might come loose etc.) I told my fiancé that I meeded a few days to think about it. But, likely we are going to try to get our money back and go to an independent, trusted jewler where we can pick a setting and choose a diamond.

We're definitely in the process of dealing with all of this. I'm trying to decide if I'm having it re-cast or just returning all together (I bet that will be a battle) I'm so sorry you had such a horrible experience too!!

That's exactly what happened in my case!! My fiancé (bless his heart) told no one and just bought the ring, only telling two members of my family after it was purchased, and two days before he surprised me with a proposal. If I'd have known ahead of time, or if my family had, it would have come from a private jewler. Kays, and chains are ehh..okay for small things, but not for an engagement ring that's supposed to last a lifetime!!

I was curious how you get to know the quality of a private jeweler. My closest guess would be checking out a local arts festival to see the work that smaller artists do around our area.
