Engagement ring problems

Heather, on April 19, 2020 at 8:21 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 11
Hi everyone,
My fiancé proposed on New Years Day and it’s been very exciting. Since the weather has gotten nicer I’ve been doing some yard work. If I don’t take off my ring, my finger turns black where my ring is. Has this happened to anyone else? Is it just dirt trapped under my ring? Is it sweat? My ring is from a trusted jeweler so I doubt it’s the quality of the ring but it is kinda freaking me out a bit. I’ve been trying to remember just to take it off when working outside but often forget. Engagement ring problems 1

Maybe ask the jeweler about it? I wonder if you could be having some sort of reaction to the metal used.

Hmm this may be your answer. Is your ring gold?

It could be the chemicals from the soil, plant food, fertilizer etc interacting with the chemicals in your sweat and the metal band.

I wouldn’t wear my engagement ring to do yard work regardless of it coloring your skin. It’s such an expensive piece of jewelry that you don’t want to damage by mowing the lawn or trimming shrubs.

Not sure about the coloring either, just like the others who posted. But when I garden and wear my ring (rarely) I will just put gardening gloves over my ring.

Alternatively I place it back in the box if I know I am going to be working outside.

Hopefully your finger is okay and no longer discolored! ☺️

A jeweler will tell you you should remove your ring when you sleep, shower, swim, cook or prep food, wash dishes, do yard work, exercise, do construction, etc. Wearing your ring while doing those things damages your ring from physical wear and tear as well as exposure to chemicals and can put you at greater risk of injury (look up a de-gloved finger if you are feeling inquisitive, don't if you have a weak stomach). They say your ring is the last thing you should put on when you leave the house and the first thing you take off when you come home.

Some people never take their ring off, but I pretty much follow the rules above. I almost always have my ring box with me if I'm wearing my ring, that way I have a safe place to put it if I need to take it off. If you aren't worried about the quality of your ring, I say just remove your ring when you do yard work, and your problem will be solved!

When we first got engaged we had a cheap ring from Wish until I picked out my ring. When the coating wore off after about a month, it started to do this. According to some research I did it was because 1) my Ph was acidic naturally and wore off the coating and 2) either the ring was fake or only gold-plated and also wore off. Now that I have a solid white gold ring, it no longer does that.

You could try clear nail polish on the inside if it's not engraved. I have this reaction to some metals and this normally stops it as theres a layer protecting the skin without damaging the jewlery. Or you could have a jeweler caot it in a less reactive metal on the inside.

That’s actually a really good idea and may be my issue I have super sensitive skin. Thanks for your thoughts! I’ve started taking off when I go outside and whatnot but I really just wanted to know what could be causing it. Thanks!

I’ve stopped wearing when I’m outside for the most part sometimes I forget. But my finger is back to normal so that’s good!
