Engagement Ring Problems

Bianca, on April 16, 2019 at 9:57 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 20

I've only had my engagement ring since late January... 3 months. Yesterday, I discovered it was already bent and 2 of the diamond chips around the sides fell out. I have it insured so I'm not extremely upset about the lost diamonds, however why is the band bending? It's platinum, which I thought was one of the stronger metals. Has anyone dealt with this? We're taking it to the jeweler this afternoon to find out more.

I have a platinum band as well. Lost one of the side diamond two weeks after getting it and another a few months later. Mine was because they resized it from a 7 to a 4.5. Not sure why the platinum is bending though. I wear mine constantly (Sleeping, showering, working out, riding motorcycles) so I’m pretty rough on mine and have never bent it.

That sounds like a defective ring. My platinum ring is 90 years old, almost, and aside from a little wear of the milgrain, the stones are all tight and perfect. Platinum really shouldn't bend.

Thanks guys! I took it to 2 different jewelers -- I work in Manhattan so took it over to the diamond district. Both said the band is just too thin, especially with the pave around the sides. Taking it back to the original jeweler this week and he said he's going to fix it, but I should consider resetting into something thicker. My thought is - why would he make it so small to begin with? It is a custom ring (the center diamond is my grandmas) but shouldn't he know as a jeweler that it wouldn't work being so thin!!

What!!!! not sure why it is bending unless they mixed the platinum with something else so it is making the metal softer. I would definitely be taking it to your jeweler and asking why this is happening. Good luck with your ring.

Yikes. Why did he set it in something he knew wouldn't work? I would get him to reset it and hopefully not charge you.

Smiley sad I'm really not sure! Now he's blaming FH by saying that he asked for this specific size but (& I love FH) he is absolutely clueless when it comes to rings. I just showed him a pic of what I liked and he gave that to the jeweler. He's fixing the shape and giving us the 2 chips no charge. We're figuring out next steps for maybe resetting the whole thing.

I'm not 100% sure what the exact size is...trying to measure it on a ruler at work and it almost looks like 1.5 mm. I'm attaching some photos, I think it make more sense if you can see.

Silver will bend like that. Or it could be a softer/cheaper metal in the middle and then be played with silver or gold and that could happen too. I grew up in a family of jewelers. Are you sure it's platinum?

That's so strange, I'm so sorry! Your ring is gorgeous though! I think it varies a lot based on the jeweler... My sister has a very hefty band, and she was back to her jeweler 3 times in the first 6 months due to setting issues. I thought maybe the jeweler may have not been so skilled, but who knows. My band is very thin- probably about the same thickness as yours, white gold, with pave stones, and (knock on wood) I haven't had one issue with the setting or pave stones. I've been wearing it since early August, I almost never take it off and I'm very accident prone, and I have full on smashed my hand into things more than a few times. I was worried after a recent trip/fall and I brought it in to be checked - no issues. I give a LOT of credit to my jeweler, he is very skilled. I was going to go elsewhere for our wedding rings, but after seeing how well this delicate band holds up, I'm going to stick with them. Good luck, I'm sure they can fix it up!

Your ring is beautiful. I was thinking it was bending in the other direction for some reason. Its so thin where the sides stones are, I could see how they would fall out. Mine is built up under the side stones so they're really secure. I'm definitely not an expert, but I think they jeweler should have advised against that in the first place.

I agree!! As a jeweler, your FH should have been advised that your band needed to be thicker. I've never seen platinum bend like that! I'm so sorry. I think its the jewler's fault. It's lovely!

Update for everyone: My jeweler now apparently only works out of Long Island (over an hour away for us) He said he'd fix the band and side stones for free but honestly the hassle of getting out there and just dealing with him is so unappealing. We're taking to back to a local jeweler in Manhattan and just going to pay for it to be fixed and then think about resetting the whole thing to a thicker band. Thank you all for your encouragement and well wishes!!

Hey OP, I have a pretty thin band too, but yours definitely look like it needs to be thicker. The width on mine is very narrow and I haven’t had any problems with the pavé chips.

Before you do this, I would take it to an appraiser to test the metal! In my previous marriage, I got my first ring from Kay Jewelers where the card that came with the ring from IGI said that the setting was platinum. When I took my engagement ring to be appraised for insurance and to sell the old rings, he tested the metal and said that it was not platinum. I was so shocked because that means that someone could have switched it from when I first got the ring (it was originally a gold band and I wanted white gold so they changed it out and made it way thinner too). So before you waste your money on fixing this, I would see if it really is platinum and then if not (and check the diamond grades too while you are there), go back to that jeweler with the appraiser's report for your money back!

My ring is platinum with an extremely thin band (1.6 mm) and it hasn’t bent. I agree with Tara, maybe check and be sure it’s a platinum ring because there’s no way it should be bending if it is.

It does sound like that's something he should've known... I would take it to another jeweler honestly. Luckily only the side diamonds fell out this time, I would be soo worried about losing your main stone because you said that one was sentimental. The band def shouldn't be bending like that and he SHOULD know better!

I know I'm a little late chiming in but I have platinum as well and have never had a problem. That sounds like a serious flaw in craftsmanship and inferior metal. I would be concerned that they didn't really give you platinum. Mine have never bent or lost stones. That is not normal.
