Engagement Ring Held Hostage

Kayse, on April 15, 2020 at 10:33 AM Posted in Planning 0 24

I feel bad for being sad about it since many people are going through such a horrible time right now, but I need to vent. When my FH and I decided to get married, we discussed me wearing my grandmother's ring as my engagement ring. A few days later, since FH can't keep a secret, he told me that he bought me a ring! He showed me pictures of the floor model and it is GORGEOUS. It meant so much to me that he had done that; he said he wanted us to have something of our own to pass down and I could wear my grandmother's ring on my right hand, which is what my mom does. It had to be special ordered because he made a few changes to the floor sample the store had and because I'm a size four. He bought it on February 29th and it was supposed to be in by April 10th (it's being made in Canada.) Well.....because of the current situation we're in, it was delayed. This weekend we spoke to the jeweler and he said the ring was finished, but the Canadian government would not allow it to be shipped. They said that as of now, it is ready to be shipped on the day they re-open on May 7th. Of course, who knows if they even will re-open on that day. I don't know if we should cut our losses and try to get a refund or wait. It's just frustrating.

I would wait! I know it sucks - we got my ring from Zales, and the size they have for women by default is tiny. 🙄 So I had to wait nearly a month for me to get my ring back from resizing, and my hubby didn't want to propose until we had it!!! It was such a loooong wait. Its frustrating, but you will probably have to wait for a ring either way with the current situation. Just take a few breaths and know that the right ring is worth waiting. It may not be until May, but your ring will come!

Thanks :-) It would be fine if I knew it was coming in May, but it could be a looooooong time before Canada opens up. I guess we'll just have to keep checking.

I would wait! You sound attached to it already. We had my ring made custom and I was soooo impatient waiting for it to finally be done so I understand. Once you finally have it on your finger it will be worth the wait, even if it’s a bit frustrating now.

I would just wait. If it was a special order, chances are that they would still charge you something since a size 4 is also not the standard size and they have to hope that someone who is the same size wants that ring in order to make that sale (you are really only supposed size a ring 1 size up or down, any more and you risk the integrity of the ring, and stock size is size 7).

You can always wear your grandmother's ring in the mean time.

Yeeeeah. Just keep checking! Even if they don't open until June, I still think the right ring is worth the wait. As much as it sucks! I would say it shouldn't be more than just two months. I'm so sorry. Smiley sad

Yeah, they didn't want to size the one in the store since it has to be made so much smaller. I will keep waiting for now since I am super attached to it! And I'm glad to have my grandmother's ring for now.

I would just wait. It is not an essential item that you have to have to get married. At least it gives you something to look forward to receiving!

Oh man, that stinks Kayse! But I would definitely wait for the ring!! 💍

It's ready to go once those shipping restrictions are lifted, and you'd most likely have to start a brand new customer order somewhere else because size four rings aren't super common!

It'll be worth the wait! I'm waiting for mine, too (coming from NYC)! I'm already married but being ringless is crazy! I fidget and there's nothing there, lol. We'll wait together!

What’s the rush? I realize you’re probably eager to get it but there it sounds like the jeweler is doing what they can.

No rush. I understand that things are unusual right now. I'm just worried that I won't be able to get it at all and it was significant investment financially.

I understand that, but they did communicate with you and stated what their plan is. What more can they do? I’d be concerned if I didn’t hear from them.

They never reached out to us; my FH reached out several times. At first they assured us that there were no delays. Then they eventually said April 30th. The latest time we checked they said it is ready when the Canadian government lets them go back on May 7, but of course we can't count on that.

Since you love the ring and he had it altered for you, I would wait. It’s not something you can easily replace. I know it’s not the same, but you can wear something else while you’re waiting. We are in a similar situation with my FH’s band coming from the UK. We are waiting it out because he loves it and it’s not a design/metal combination that we can find in the US without getting it custom made.

I know how you feel! my FH ordered my ring from zales and they sent the wrong ring! Sending it back and getting a refund has been a huge headache for us! So sorry you’re experiencing this too!

OMFG you guys. So, earlier today, they texted FH to let him know that the ring had arrived! We were so happy! FH had a Zoom meeting, so I went to pick it up. They were supposed to bring it out to the car. Well, when they asked me to come inside, I knew there was a problem. The man said we never should have been contacted. The ring is the wrong size. I've waited over two months for my ring to be custom made because my fingers are so small, and it's a 6 1/2, not a four. The size issue was THE WHOLE REASON it had to be special made in Canada. I asked why this happened, and he blamed the pandemic. I guess it causes people to be unable to read numbers?? I am so upset.
