Engagement ring - choice or surprise?

I’ll be honest, I did not speak much on it and entrusted a girlfriend of mine to drop hints. He ended up going to his mother and she picked out the ring. I have never even met this woman and what I ended up with, is a bit saddening. I’m trying to make the most of it though and will start a discussion shortly to brainstorm wedding bands/ring enhancers that might compliment it.


Take it from me, be transparent and do the legwork for your fiancé. Or, be like me and live with the consequences.

We’ve been together for five years and one year into dating, he created a Pinterest account just so he could look at my wedding board and see what engagement rings I liked. He took screenshots of it then and about three weeks ago, he proposed with a ring that looked identical to everything I had picked out 🥲 it’s so beautiful and it was so thoughtful of him to take note of what I loved!

I had discussed my vision about the band not the diamond itself so that was a total surprise!

Yes and yes. He gifted me a family ring I wear on family and glamorous occasions. We like to make up stories about it's intercontinental origins and the lives of family long gone.

Oops meant, it was a surprise and yes, I'm happy with it. To add, we don't wear rings daily due to our lines of work , but our wedding and engagement 💍 are still special to us.

He really wanted to make sure I liked it/it was what I wanted, and asked me if I would mind designing the ring myself. I said sure! I just didn't want to see the actual ring until he was proposing to me, and I wanted to be surprised by the proposal. It worked out perfectly! I worked with a custom jeweler to design the ring. Once all the specs were complete, I bowed out of the process and they worked with my fiance to produce and deliver the ring. I had no idea when it would be ready, when he got it, until he was getting down on one knee. It was perfect!

My fiancé took me to pick out a ring to purpose with but kept the date he was purposing a surprise. I gave him options but would’ve been upset with the rings I initially picked out because they didn’t look the way I thought they would on my finger. You’re the one wearing and looking at it forever I think you should get to pick it out!

He asked me what design I liked and I sent him a few pictures. He did pretty good. Like someone else said, the final
decision was his. I think he asked my sister for her opinion but he picked the one he thought I would like and I love it.

I had sent tons of pictures to my fiancé just before he decided the was going to buy one and propose. My ring is so similar to the ones I showed him! I love it!

He took me to look at rings and I fell in love with one on the spot! I told him I would give him options to pick from so it could still be a surprise but every other ring felt wrong for me so he got exactly the one I loved! I honestly loved it because I’m really particular about my jewelry so knowing he was going to get one I liked put my mind at ease!

My fiance and i went ring shopping together. At the time, he didn’t purchase the ring I wanted. He said he would come back. WELL he went back months later and ended up putting a down payment on a completely different ring, complete opposite of what I wanted. He sent me a few different styles of rings and asked my opinion of them. The one ring that I said I hate was actual the picture of the ring he was paying for so he went back and got the ring switched. He proposed with a ring that’s better than what I originally wanted!!
