Engagement ring and what to do?

Jenn, on October 11, 2018 at 10:27 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 18

I know this isnt exactly the right place to post this but I need some advice... My boyfriend of 5 years and I have been looking at engagement rings, we have decided to go custom because I am kind of picky and I havent found a stock ring that I love. I’m looking at princess cut, 3 stone, and I really like the vintage look. I just want to know if some things are worth it. I like the look of diamonds on the prongs/ ring head. I also really like the beading and scroll work on the edge as well as how some bands are tapered as it goes towards the top by the center stone/stones. I also like the way a peekaboo diamond looks. What I want to know is how worth it is it to have all the things I said I like in an engagement ring? Do you think it will look too busy with all of that going on? Right now all we have been looking at is engagement rings, I have no idea what I would want as a wedding band that being said is it a waste to get all the tiny detailing on the sides? Will people see it? Do the sides wear away after years of constant wear and tear making the beautiful detailing a waste? I feel like I’m over thinking everything but it’s just such a large purchase I want to make sure everything about it is perfect! Thanks so much for any advice! Pictures welcome if you want to show yours.

Here is a Photo of the one with diamonds on the prongs

I’m having trouble picturing all the things you are describing, do you have any inspiration pics? Here’s mine, it has diamonds on the side and a design and I love it. I’ve had it for about six months now and haven’t noticed any issues. It is definitely important to have the prongs bc you don’t want the diamonds to get loose and fall out.

Why not just hint at him what you like and be surprised? Surprises are fun and the ring will mean so much more! I know it can be (doesnt have to be) a big purchase, but dont put so much emphasis on your engagement ring, In the end it is just a ring. Do you hear people who have been married for years say "I dont like my engagement ring " or that they wish they had a different one? Nope.

Hey Jenn! If you’re still having trouble finding one you love, search Verragio. They’re a little pricey but have all the details you mentioned. I have one and love it!!! This pic doesn’t show the sides and isn’t a three stone lol but just for reference Smiley smile

Here are a couple I found right off the bat that you might like.
Anyways, as far as is it worth it goes, as long as it isn’t breaking the bank and causing financial stress, I think it’s totally worth it to bling out your e ring the way you want it. It’s going to be on your finger forever!

My FH and I picked out my ring together, and I too had the problem of obsessing about every detail and wanted to go custom. I got like, abnormally stressed about it lol.

I actually found it easier and less stressful to just pick something in the store so you’re not overanalyzing every detail. Have you gone into a store yet? FH and I did, spent about 3 hours there trying on just about every ring they had 😂 I was “eh” about all of them. Then I put on this one, and we just KNEW. My FH said my face just started glowing when I saw that ring on my hand. It became such a simple decision really once I tried on one that we realized was very “me.”

Designing custom rings online is a good place to start and I did that too, but I found when I tried on similar rings to the ones I designed online, I didn’t like how they looked on my finger. I really think you should go to a store to see what looks good actually on your finger specifically... everyone’s fingers are different!

    Jenn,

I custom designed my engagement ring and wedding band. Mine is also vintage-styled, 3 stone, and I have a lot of detailing going on. I have scroll work beneath the bridge and a lot of milgrain beading, with peak-a-boo stones on the sides. I don't think the designs you're looking at are too busy, although I would not suggest going with stones alongside the prongs, simply because your ring will get caught on plenty of things and you're running a high risk of them dislodging and falling out. Perhaps you could get a claw-foot prong style to add a little more character?

I've had my engagement ring for over 2 years and there is no noticeable wearing on the beading. Have faith in the jewelry shop that they know what works, and what won't when it comes to wear and tear and pairing with bands.

    Here's mine:

Oh and it wasn’t letting me attach pictures before but this is mine Smiley smile it’s also a 3-stone, princess cut, with a unique setting! My peek-a-boo Stone is a sapphire also (which is my birthstone, coincidentally, but it’s a trademark of Vera Wang which is the designer of the ring lol).

Something to keep in mind (the only thing I DONT like about my ring) is because the setting is so high, it’s a little top-heavy so it spins a lot. It also definitely needs to be sized smaller but even then I think it’ll still spin a bit. It’s not a huge deal but if you think that may bother you, you may want to get a lower setting. I do love the setting of mine though, and my wedding band doesn’t block it at all.

It’s morganite! I saw it in the case and fell in love with it! I feel like the pictures do it no justice, it’s such a shape shifter and looks different depending upon the lighting.

My cousin had the same issues with her ring! Her setting was so high, it consistently got caught, and her diamond fell out! She ended up getting a different ring for an anniversary and it’s more flush, like a band.

Speaking from experience here. I wish I didn't change the head of mine to the one with the diamonds. We designed my ring because I could not find one that I loved. It's a rose gold garland band with a 2 carat cushion cut diamond on top. I had to have cushion cut. I thought I had to have diamonds on the head. I really wanted it. They put a temporary head on it that had double prongs. I really liked it, but still thought I needed the diamonds on the head, It finally came in and they put it on and I am not in love with it. I feel so bad after the stink I made to get it, but it sits lower (which I don't like) and it is not double pronged on top. I feel like the double prong just showcases my center diamond so much more. Honestly, the diamonds on the prongs are so small, you hardly see them. Once I get my wedding band next to them, I don't think you will even notice. Here is a pic of it with the diamond head...which you can't see, of course! Lol

If you're interested in the vintage look...my ring is from Brilliant Earth and they have beautiful vintage styles. Their diamonds are also ethically sourced (no blood diamonds!)

Or just buy a vintage ring. Very cost effective, more unique, better cut diamond and often higher karat of gold

Have you checked out Whitehouse Brothers? https://www.whitehousebrothers.com/vintage-engagement-rings

I’m always inspired by 30s/40s style jewelry and all of their designs are complex. We had my grandmother’s stone set in their Heart of the Vineyard ring in rose gold and I get compliments all of the time because it’s so different!
