Engagement picture timing issues (for optimal lighting)

Jessilyn, on September 10, 2020 at 4:46 PM Posted in Planning 0 6
I’m probably way overthinking this but here we go.. My fiancé and I have engagement pictures scheduled in a few weeks. We’re going 4 hours away to a really pretty beach for them, so we scheduled them for a Sunday so we could head down there Saturday and spend the night. from what I know about photography the best lighting is early early in the morning or when the sun is starting to go down. Especially for our photographer and her style, she typically shoots around golden hour..

The problem is that we were planning on leaving on sunday hoping get back by 7 because we have two children his mother will be watching for us. That would mean we would need to leave at 2, leaving our pictures to be done around 12 at the latest. So now I’m really nervous about the timing of everything in regards to the lighting situation. The only weekend availability’s she had were Sunday’s so that Saturday evening isn’t an option. I feel bad asking his mom to watch the kids for another night because they’re still on the younger side and not the absolute easiest to deal woth.

Would Sunday morning (right around sunrise) be an option for you to take your engagement pictures? If you took your pictures around sunrise, you should definitely be able to get back home in time on Sunday evening. Otherwise, would his mother be willing to watch the kids on Sunday night instead of Saturday, and you drive to the beach on Sunday morning and come back on Monday afternoon (and take the pictures on Sunday evening)?

I would do them Sunday morning or Saturday evening if that’s an option.

Sunday morning may be your best option as there’ll probably be less people to share the beach with in addition to the lighting.
I just had my engagement photos done a few days ago before sunset and there were a few others also with professional photographers taking engagement and family pics. Both times we passed the white gazebo, someone was using it. So I wasn’t able to get my photos in that area. Smiley sad

Golden hour is nice for soft warm glow but early sunrise is also good for photographers for soft and flattering lighting. It's harsh direct light (like at noon) that is less flattering to imperfections, causes squinting and creates shadows on faces. I'd say do early at sunrise. Then enjoy a lunch to yourselves. Plus you can never plan for a perfect photo, you may have a cloudy day or unexpected rain!

I do not know where your pretty beach is. But in many areas near water, bog lakes or ocean, the " best light is first thing in the morning" is not true. Many beaches have a couple hours of fog or mist, consistently, or often. So check. We lived with the water dropping off the end of our lawn for 2 years, and 3 or 4 of every five otherwise nice days, an hour or two the blowing mist meant you could not see the water. And clothes you were wearing got damp or wet without a jacket. Check on your particular beach if you go for early morning.
