Engagement Photos at IKEA! And a Burst Bubble

Chel, on May 6, 2017 at 7:34 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 25

I dunno, I thought it was clever and fun so I figured hey maybe I'd post one of our photos on the IKEA subreddit! Picked my favorite one and I stuck it on Imgur so I could link that instead of my Facebook.

Well... the first comment on Imgur was "you are a little retarded aren't you."

The one nice comment someone made felt hollow and like someone was just trying to make me feel better.

I imagine I'm not the first person in the world crying over some comments on the internet but now I'm pretty sad and want to post somewhere where people might be able to commiserate.

Anyone have stories about their bubbles being burst that can make me feel less alone?

I felt down when my mom came dress shopping with me.

I walk out in a dress I thought was beautiful and the first thing she said was "wow your really getting fat! Look at your hips!"

Seeking the validation of strangers on the internet is usually a bad idea

Some people are just dicks. Especially online, where they feel like they can say whatever they want without consequence. Don't let some random jerk bring you down. Are you happy with the photos? That's the only important thing.

People can be jerks sometimes. I'm sorry they said that and made you feel bad. I think the picture is adorable. Is there a story behind why you chose Ikea for your e-pics location?

BTW, now would be a great time to update your avatar...maybe even using that picture! It will help set you apart from everyone else and will help us all start to recognize you when you post. I'm posting instructions, but I'll also be happy to update it for you if you would like.

@Future Mrs.B that's awful! Of all the people you'd think would support you Smiley sad

@K.M I wasn't posting on Imgur to seek comments, it was a means to share an image on a relevant subeddit. In retrospect it might've worked out better to not title the photo something that made it look like I was celebrating or something and wanted praise. Thanks for your advice

My bubble doesn't get burst because I don't let the opinion of internet strangers have any bearing on my life. If you're going to post something anywhere on the internet, you need to be prepared for the shittiest comments possible even if your post is super positive. I've seen cancer survivors post things about recovery and assholes still make shitty comments. Comes with the territory of the internet unfortunately. If you're even slightly sensitive, I recommend only lurking and not posting on things like that.

Seems like a cute/funny session. People on the internet are routinely awful. Particularly on Reddit, forums, and the like. Don't put anymore thought into it.

I don't think OP was seeking validation, but more so wanted to share her excitement. It sad but that is the risk you run posting things on the internet. I remember when I accidentally made something from Gishwhes public on Imgur and got my ass handed to me by them. Its just not a friendly site.

I think the picture is adorable and glad you shared it here with us. I would encourage you to share your stuff on here, I would say while we are blunt with our answers sometimes but this site is full of people who do want to uplift one another. Stick around some Smiley smile

Aw that sucks. Your picture is cute! Yes, my mom burst my bubble when I first tried on dresses. I tried one on I kinda thought was cool and different and she said "oh that's ugly." Ok cool. Haha! I'm over it now and love the dress I ended up with but it really stung at the time.

Agreed. It's clear you two are at ease together. I find reddit/imgur can be particularly harsh.

I think this is a sweet and unique idea! I love the photo (: imgur usersub can be nasty. It's like they pic and choose when to be nice and eat people alive. I posted on there once and the comments were so mean and out of left field, I ended up deleting it. Don't let it beat you up.

I would have never thought to do engagement photos at Ikea. I think it's rather novel and cool.
