Engagement party

Jayne, on October 10, 2020 at 10:33 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 10

I feel like I have dropped the ball. My daughter got engaged August 2019. We had a small immediate family celebration the weekend she got engaged. I never hosted an engagement party. Her wedding date is May 2021. Is it too late to have an engagement party. We are just getting into planning her wedding. With her long engagement, I was having a hard time getting excited about things until now it is real now. Is it too late to have an engagement party?

I personally wouldn’t want an engagement party well over a year after I got engaged, but that’s up to your daughter and her FS to decide.

Engagement parties aren’t necessary, but they’re usually done shortly after the engagement or a year before the wedding. A lot of people actually look at them as just another expense (both for the hosts and the guests). You also already had celebration with immediate family, so I’m not sure why another party would be needed, especially with other pre-wedding events on the horizon.
Talk with your daughter and see how she feels about it.

I personally wouldn’t want an engagement party at all ever. If she is also not that kind of person, just move along, she had one celebration already that’s enough. It’s also probably almost time for the bridal shower and then there will be a bachelorette shortly thereafter so trying to have three different celebrations months apart will get a little difficult for cross country travelers and just exhausting in general for everyone else that’s involved

Sounds like she already had a celebration with close family and friends. So, I wouldn’t worry about it.

I did not have an engagement party, though I had a short engagement compared to many. I would really think that small gathering was enough of an engagement celebration.

I have never heard of an engagement party until I came to wedding wire. If I was in the same shoes as your daughter I would not want an engagement party so long after getting engaged. Maybe you can throw her an epic bridal shower instead?

I wouldn’t be throwing an engagement party at this point. If you want to throw her a party, I’d focus on the bridal shower.

Unfortunately I have and she is hurt that we didn’t have one. My son got married 2 years ago and my sister and best friend threw him an epic engagement party. So I think I have some making up to do. I feel I only have one chance at this and I’ve already let her down. Dang it. I will take the advice of another person who commented and have an epic couples shower.

It depends on how far along the planning process you guys are, if they sent the save the dates, then throw an epic shower, if not you could always blame it on COVID-19. Guests wouldn't know the drama but you could say...now that regulations tiers have lifted or finally found a place that could hold please help us celebrate...
