Engagement party: Pros & Cons

Gonnabeaburch, on December 27, 2018 at 11:33 PM Posted in Planning 0 10
Although my FH and I decided to get married back in March, we are just now getting to the rings, planning, and officially annoucing our engagement. We have briefly discussed having an engagement party, but aren't sure if it's necessary or not since our wedding will be in July. Please share with me wether or not you had an engagement party and why. Lay out the pros and cons of having one for me please.

What does when you’re getting married have to do with an engagement party?

I had an engagement party 6 months after we got engaged. I let it all sink in first and then I waited for a reason... Our engagement party was exactly a year before the wedding so the theme was a night in Paris (we got engaged in Paris) with all save the date details (napkins, water bottle, wine bottles, snapchat filters). Instead of sending dave the dates people took wine bottles home with it.

It was the first we had all family and friends in the room to discuss all wedding details. By then we had most of the vendors already booked and it got everyone so excited. Since our engagement was just the two of us in another country this was a way to celebrate us. Totally worth it in my book!

Do it! You won't regret it.

I honestly don't know the etiquette on engagement parties or if there is a timeframe, but it does cost money and being that our wedding is in roughly 7 months, I wasn't sure if it would be worth the expense.

That's so sweet! I love that! Most of our actual wedding guests will be coming from out of state though. Is an engagement party supposed to just be people who will be invited to the wedding?

Yes, whoever you invite to the engagement party you must invite to the wedding. Now if you are having 100 guest for the wedding you do not need to invite all 100 guest to the engagement party. Your out of town guest won't come for the engagement party so that puts you cuts the list for you.

Not everyone that attended our party would be attending the wedding but they were all invited. They just declined because is a destination wedding.

Proper etiquette is that you don't host your own engagement party and that only guests invited to your wedding should be invited.

I did not know that! I thought that was just bridal shower and bachelor/bachelorette parties. That's really good to know. Thank you!

We didn't have one. I don't know if there was really any reason we didn't, it just felt like money that didn't need to be spent I guess.

That's a bit how I felt. Now that I know you can't throw your own engagement party though, we definitely won't have one. I don't feel comfortable with someone throwing a party on our behalf since I have to put so many restrictions in place for the event.
