Engagement Party. Is it necessary?

Brenda, on December 16, 2017 at 11:24 PM Posted in Planning 1 26

We just announced our engagement a week ago. We don't plan to be wed for another 2-3 years. Should we have an engagement party? If so, how long should we wait?

An engagement party is not necessary - but it's not something that you would throw for yourselves anyway - if no one offers, then you don't get one, if someone does, then you have it on their timeframe.

I didn't want one. Or a bridal shower, or a bachelorette party.

We didn't have an engagement party. There were so many other events, that we definitely didn't miss having it.

Definitely not necessary. I didn't have one and don't really care. If someone offers to throw you one then great.

    I think they’re really unnecessary.

Agree with only having one if someone offers to throw it for you. Otherwise, not necessary

I didn't want one and no one offered so it worked out perfectly. Totally unnecessary.

No. And you don't throw your own.

Nope. We didn't have one, but they are pretty common in our circle. They are usually thrown by friends or the bride's family.

We didn't have one. Engagement parties aren't a thing in either of our families. The only time I've even seen one thrown is on TV.

It's not needed. To me it was a waste of money

You don't need to have an engagement party at all if you don't want to. I didn't have one.

No one in my social circle does these. I didn't even know it was a thing until recently. (Needless to say, I did not have one.)

I will have a 2 1/2 year long engagement. My mother and FMIL are hosting one next month for FH and I. We have been engaged for a year now. I am happy we are having one because it gives both families and bridal parties the chance to meet everyone.

No one around here does them either, so we didn't have one or a bridal shower. The only thing I'm having is a bachelorette party which I'd be totally ok without, but my MOH is dying to throw one so whatever.

I say or isn't, only because all your friends family pretty much know you are engaged. Save the money and put that money on your big day...

We had one! It was a lot of fun! It was more of a celebration luncheon of us getting engaged. Ours was an "I do BBQ" theme. We didn't expect gifts, just some food and drinks and getting to see the whole family. We called everyone prior and told them about the engagement but it was so much nicer seeing everyone in person! I would definitely recommend it!

I personally decided not to have one because we don't have friends (lol!). That and my family are total party poppers and don't want to do anything other than sit around.

I don't see why you couldn't at least go out to dinner to celebrate. I only found out when I joined on here you don't plan it yourself (not the case that I've seen, and it's never bothered anyone as far as I know). I'd rather attend a party while the hype is still up rather than a year later when it's the norm. Go for it!
