"Engagement Anniversary" gift?

KellySD, on May 4, 2015 at 3:51 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 17

My FH and I got engaged on May 9th last year, so I'd love to acknowledge the date in some way this year (especially since he totally hit it out of the park with his surprise proposal), but my sister is returning from a two month trip overseas on the same day so we'll be be spending the day celebrating her return instead. When I told him we'd be spending the day with my family, he seemed a little bummed that we'd wouldn't get to celebrate just the two of us. While I reassured him that we'd celebrate the night before or day after with dinner or something like that, I was thinking I kind of want to get him a small gift to show him that the day is so special to me. I've been meaning to try some DIY wood photo transfer projects, so maybe I could do that with one of our engagement photos? Other ideas? What do you all think? Have you celebrated your "engagement anniversary"?

FH worked on the actual day, but on the weekend we went out to dinner at one of our favorite restaurants & made it a date night. we wanted to celebrate the One Year to our wedding date more, so we're going to have dinner at the restaurant associated with our venue and open up one of the bottles of wine we brought back from Italy for special occasions. no gifts just making sure we spend the time together.

I'm all for celebrating things, but an anniversary for the engagement? .. Do something sweet for him if you want but it's not like there needs to be a party or anything

No, we didn't celebrate it. I feel kind of silly celebrating it, even though we have a longer engagement than you. I would just acknowledge it to your FH. Honestly, doing something kind of feels like celebrating "month-aversaries" in grade school. But I never did those either. You're so close to your wedding, that I feel it's unnecessary.

I wouldn't get him a gift, to be honest.

If I wanted to do something, I would probably just write him a short letter about how I'm looking forward to marrying him, how special his proposal was, etc.

Of course FH didn't even know what day we got engaged until I reminded him. So, there's that.

We won't be celebrating, but we'll also already be married on our 1 year "engagement anniversary".

I guess "celebrate" was too strong of a word. I definitely don't want to do anything big or throw a party or anything like that, just a small token like I said. Obviously after we'rd married we'll just celebrate the wedding anniversary.

I think maybe we'd get dinner or something, but no gifts. Probably the same for our wedding date this year as like a "-1 year anniversary" kind of thing just to be funny.

Maybe take him out to a nice dinner or something to that effect? That would be a nice little token without going too over the top.

@Nicole, love the idea of a -1 year anniversary!

I'm actually excited to celebrate our 9 year anniversary of our first date next month since it'll be the last time we really celebrate that anniversary Smiley smile

@Nicole I was thinking to of having a happy-1 anniversary in a few weeks just to be funny too! Mine is the day after yours. :-)

Celebrating mine would be a little odd because my wedding was 3 months prior. Just seemed Unnecessary to add another random anniversary. Kind of begins to take away from the important dates

You can make a love jar. Get as cute jar and make it nice with a ribbon and you can buy foam letters from a craft store and spell out: love jar. Inside the jar put tinny one sentence notes about what you love about him. Like "I love the way you make ma laugh" and etc.

I think a small gift like a framed photo is nice if the timing makes sense for you to honor the day. Our engage-iversary is right in the middle of the year before our wedding but we will probably just cook a nice dinner at home and open a special bottle of wine. I do love the "love jar" idea!

We will be married by the time our engagement-versary comes around, so I don't we'll celebrate it. Maybe I'll make a special dinner since I'm the one that does the cooking Smiley smile

I dont think anything is wrong w/ celebrating or commemorating your engagement anniversary while your still engaged. I mean you're only going to get to "celebrate" it once or twice before you're celebrating your wedding anniversary. I think a photo of the day would be nice. of maybe something special that he would like.
