We went ring shopping and he has put a ring on layaway for me, he should be getting it out soon, but I have already began to plan and telling people. Do I need to have an official engagement celebration? Should I wait until I get my ring? Is it ok to have dinner at a restaurant to announce it?

I agree with Landa ... also look at moisonite. Its a lab grown Diamond and even some diamond testers are fooled and they look great

Just say that your ring is getting resized, I got my ring, but I had to get it resized and it took almost a month, But I did tell only my family, after I did get my ring I had an engagement party.

On a lighter note, with my ringless engagement, when I asked my ex, after a year of no ring, about a ring, his response was that he "could not believe I was putting under so much pressure" (I asked once, after fending off a years worth of inquiries of "why no ring"?). Your case is different as it appears that your FS does want to get you a ring. 2d Bride's situation is different too as both parties agreed on no ring.

When my FH propose, it was without a ring. He told me that he didn't know what to get me and was afraid to get me something I didn't like. So it was a few months before I picked out my engagement ring. Everyone knew and was still happy for me.

The ring is only symbolic, however it does carry a great deal of weight. I would never whisper a word about an engagement without proof. By proof, I mean a ring. Would you announce you are moving in a new house, when no deposit has been paid? Now, Im not saying you are for sale like a house, just saying that I would wait until I had something to show that the commitment wasnt empty words

You don't have to wait until you have a ring, especially since one has already been purchased and you will have it soon.

the ring doesn't make the engagement. saying yes to the proposal makes the engagement. you already have that. enjoy the celebration and announcement however you want. of course people will have questions and you can explain things or not.

Pretty pretty please do not worry about what others think. My fiance and I decided to get married in the Fall of 2010, he was hesitant to announce that we had mutually decided to get married because he did not have a ring yet, eventually I helped him understand that I am not marrying a ring, I am marrying him. And girl... I got my ring this past May. It took a while, but we had a website, save the dates, venues, bridesmaid dresses, flowers, photographer, videographer, bridal gown, hotel reservations.... a lot accomplished before I got my ring. I took pride in shutting down those weird looks and comments about the missing ring

First off, congratulations on your engagement! =)

Second, if you were my close personal friend and you told me your ring situation I'd totally understand. The fact that I don't know you at all and I still understand, I'm more confident that other people will accept.

Enjoy your engagement, ring or no ring!

I got my ring yay!!!!! The offical proposal was June 23 2011, which I had already set a date for June 23 2012 for our wedding prior to the offical proposal, how funny is that; now I have to wait again because they had to send my ring off to get sized, Im being patient but I was ready to wear it
