Employment issues

Lisa, on November 18, 2019 at 9:38 PM Posted in Planning 0 6
I started a new job in May, its turning out that I'm very unhappy at said job. However, if I find something else now, I likely wont have paid time off for my wedding time. Has anyone else dealt with an employment change close to wedding time and how did it affect your plans? Any advice? Thank you.

So I was super unhappy at my old job, and got written up over something very stupid that should have been solved between us two adults. That inspired me to look for a new job even though I was trying to wait til after the wedding. I found an awesome job and I had to apply, and started that November 4th. My wedding is December 13th! I’m taking the 12th-20th off, and they knew this before they hired me. It’s unpaid, but the fact that it’s so much better and less toxic is worth it. I work 4 10s, so I’ll work the 9th, 10, and 11th so it hurts ever so slightly less. We’re still going on our, luckily, paid for honeymoon. You do what you gotta do.

I got laid off... in the middle of planning. 😭 I got another job 8 weeks later but at 1/3 the salary. 😭 It was tough but it all worked out. Even though we went WAY over-budget, we started with a fairly low budget for what we could afford. Good thing because life can throw some curveballs.

If you get a new job, just don’t disclose during your interview about your wedding. Once you start it’s a pee-existing vacation that’s usually fine. Not paid but it shouldn’t be held against you. Definitely enjoy your wedding & honeymoon. There will always be another job. Very few moments in life like this you want to savor.

Your mental health and wellness is far more important as long as you can afford to make the change. I had a really bad experience where I was attacked by a patron at one of my previous jobs and I made it my most important mission to get out of there. I ended up starting my new job right at thanksgiving last year and it's been a much better experience for me. I had to take a hit because we had a week and a half off at Christmas, and I wasn't a permanent employee yet so I didn't get paid for a lot of it but for the peace of mind it was worth it.

I am starting a job at the beginning of the new year and I'm planning on telling my boss right away that I have an already booked wedding honeymoon so I won't be at work those two weeks and I'm kind of just hoping they'll be cool with it

This is the key. You need to be honest with the company who is hiring you. You may have to take some time unpaid, but as long as they know before you are hired it shouldn't be a problem.

Thank you everyone. For now, I'm going to try to stick it out while keeping my options open about what is available. My fiance had part time employment because hes in college, so one of us HAS to had paid vacation to be able to afford a vacation/honeymoon. But he agrees with Erin, my mental health will be most important and we will figure out the rest.
