Elopement v. our parents hopes

Lindsey, on September 5, 2016 at 3:24 PM Posted in Planning 0 8

We want to elope in South Africa on top of Table Mountain, because I fell in love with the country while doing long term volunteer work there. To me, its the most beautiful place in the world and has a special place in my heart. My parents are okay with me eloping, they don't care if there's a big wedding or not. But they want to be there. Trying to decide if I should give them a ceremony at the courthouse so they aren't disappointed. Because then we'll already be married technically and the fun of making it official in my dream location is gone, even if we were to have a second little ceremony in SA afterwards. Advice on how to make everyone happy?

You can't get married twice. One of these would be your legally recognized marriage and the other would be a celebration of marriage.

If you want to elope there, then do it. Elope, vacation there, and when you get back, you could do a celebration of your marriage for your parents to see; or, wait to do a vow renewal on your anniversary for more of a wedding feel.

Why not have a little ceremony after SA? Get what you want, then having a ceremony and a little party with your parents and a few friends?

Would you consider a "semi-elopement"? Maybe just you and your future spouse and your parents and the spouse's parents (if they want to be there)?

Why can't you just go on a honeymoon to SA?

Also, what about a small destination wedding? You could just do immediate family (parents + siblings) and maybe a few close friends where you'd like to get married.

Any possibility of live-streaming your wedding in SA? Then when you come back, you could have a family celebration so everyone could celebrate with you

Can you have a small destination wedding in SA with immediate family attending? Or do you really want it to be just you, FH, your officiant and witnesses?

I'm in a similar situation and would love to know what you did!
