Eh! I don't think my rings fit right, but I can't really get them sized.

JulyPittsburghBride, on June 19, 2016 at 5:01 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 23

My wedding band is in (yay!). It hugs my engagement ring. I had to get my engagement ring sized up from a 5.5 to 7 because, altogether, the rings are really wide. T

he jeweler really doesn't feel like I should get the rings sized down at all, but they frequently spin and sometimes seem almost likely to slip off over my knuckle with little effort. Other times, my fingers are more swollen and the rings fit better so I don't worry they will slip off, but they STILL spin. They just don't feel quite right, and I don't know what to do. My engagement ring was the same way when it came--it was a 6. I sized it to a 5.5 and it was PERFECT.

Has anyone had to deal with this? What did you do?

My jeweler told me to get them sized so that they fit in the winter (Chicago winters are COLD. Causes rings to slide off easily) and to live with a little discomfort of a slightly too small ring in the summer due to the heat. So if they're slipping now, imagine what it will be like if you live somewhere cold.

Long time lurker, first time poster. If your rings spin on your finger they're too big. Depending on what your band looks like (stones/no stones, prong-set/channel-set, all-around design, etc.), sizing down could damage it. If the jeweler is advising against sizing, you may just want to have them drop some sizing beads inside the band to make it more comfortable.

@Joanne, here are two pictures. The bands are all platinum, so they SHOULD be sizable, unless the bottom of the wedding band is not? The band has two twists, one on each side, of metal and little diamonds (I have no idea how they're set--I really don't know much about jewelry!), but they don't go all around. The bottom of the wedding band has these little bars that are curved and allow for the engagement ring to drop down into the middle. Does this help?

I just Googled sizing beads. I am not sure I understand. They're metal balls that help prevent spinning? That sounds awesome! Do they come in platinum? I couldn't find the answer to that, and I'm super sensitive to most metals, which is why we couldn't go with gold.

Disclaimer - I work for a jewelery manufacturer but I'm not a jeweler myself. My best guess is that since it's a wrap it would be tricky to size both sides the same? Or they just don't size wraps - my company doesn't make them so I don't know anything about them unfortunately. Sizing beads are exactly what you described - the jeweler would soder in small beads of metal to hold the ring in place and make it a little smaller. I would expect that you could get platinum beads though I don't know as much about them.

    P.S. Your set is gorgeous!

@Joanne--my lucky day! Thank you so much for posting and helping me. I really appreciate it, and I'll go ask them tomorrow about sizing beads!

And, thank you! He melts my heart. <3

Your set is so gorgeous!! I'm not sure if this can help since you have the ring guard, but figured I would share just in case. I have a Euro shank on my engagement ring since it's a higher set round solitaire, and I knew from my friends' experiences it would have an even higher tendency to spin. The Euro has a squared bottom that has extra weight built into it, and my ring never spins. Love it!

I use a plastic ring guard I got on Amazon. My rings are way too loose on my finger, but I have large knuckles so getting them sized down isn't really an option for me. The ring guard sits on the underside of my engagement ring, and it works perfect. As you can see from the pic, it's not very noticeable.

Mine is a thicker band and platinum. I had it sized from a 7.5 to a 5. It's snug now but not uncomfortably so and in the Ohio winter it won't fall off. It also slips a little when it's wet. I'd be devastated if mine got lost since it was FH late grandmother's

I can't imagine they wouldn't be able to size them the same. Your rings are gorgeous btw.

I got sizing beads put into my ring because it was spinning. I absolutely love them! They've stopped the spinning completely. I actually got them so I didn't have to size it down by 1/4

I would not want to wear a plastic ring guard permanently. I was going to suggest the little balls that are put into the band - not sure what their official name is haha but I'm sure any jeweler would know what you were talking about!

I'll call my jeweler when they open to discuss options. Smiley smile

If you decide to use the plastic ring guard, a word of caution. When I first got my E ring it was too big, I was still losing weight so I didn't want to size it then. So I bought some plastic ones. While they worked fine I found they pinched me & were uncomfortable. I'm going through the spinning thing now. But I won't size them down any further they're already snug fitting going past my knuckle. Keep us posted to what you decide & if the beads will do the trick for you! Your rings are BEAUTIFUL!!!

Okay, ladies--I just called my jeweler. They said to come in on a day when my rings are feeling particularly lose. They don't want to make any calls without seeing the rings on me, looking at my fingers, knuckles, etc.

Regarding options--they recommended against metal or plastic spacers if we have the financial resources to do something more permanent, as they said over time, the plastic or metal could scratch and wear away my own metal.

They said sizing balls/beads are an option, but that they are more designed for folks with broad knuckles who need help getting the ring over the knuckle but then keep it in place. They said these could dig into me uncomfortably (which is no big deal--I'll take discomfort over losing my rings!!!!!) on "tighter" days.

They said a European shank is definitely a possibility, but also think a split shank may be a great option given the width of the rings and how the wedding band is designed for the engagement ring to slip down into it.

I'll keep you all posted after I see the jeweler. Smiley smile

My engagement ring was a size 6 when DH bought it, and I needed a 5.5 so it spun a lot and was very loose. First the jeweler didn't want to size it down to a 5.5 because he was concerned it would be too tight in the summer. She wanted to give me sizing beads, and so she actually made it bigger and then put the beads in. I hated it because the ring still spun and the beads bothered my finger when it happened. So I had them removed and the ring sized down to a 5.5 which was perfect.

My wedding band is platinum with diamonds going all the way around. It's a size 6 and it can't be resized, I think because of the diamonds, not the platinum. The engagement ring now sits a little higher on my finger next to the wedding ring, and nothing really spins. They kind of help each other stay in place.

A friend of mine has ball/beads to stop hers from spinning. They are very comfortable and don't cause her any problems.
