Eco-friendly Cup Ideas

Mikki, on March 12, 2019 at 8:45 PM Posted in Planning 0 6

Hey everyone. I'm struggling with what to do for glassware. Our wedding will be "backyard" style where we have to bring everything in. Our caterer will be bringing glasses for water, but we have to bring our own for beer, wine, and champagne. I like the idea of having reusable cups and was originally thinking mason jars for everyone, but I know this has been done so many times and most people don't like drinking out of mason jars. I definitely don't want to do plastic. Maybe fancy paper cups? Any advice is appreciated. Smiley smile

We are having personalized drinking cups but they are plastic. They are our wedding favors.

Check out green paper products, they have biodegradable options.

I am having the same issue with cups, plates and flatware. Ours is in a barn and we are doing a BBQ buffet so it’s informal but I don’t want to just use plastic utensils or paper/styrofoam cups. I’m thinking of buying everyone a mason jar for them to use the night. What are you doing for plates - is your caterer providing them?

Thank you Monica for the information on that company. I love that there are more options for biodegradable plastic, but I am still struggling with the waste aspect. I'd have to order around 3-4 cups per person and even though it's biodegradable, that's a lot of waste.

Holly, I'm thinking I'll do the same with mason jars. I know it's been done so many times before, but it really does seem like the best option for us doing a backyard type of setup. Luckily, my caterer will provide all the plates and utensils for dinner. There are some great bamboo plates out there that are disposable. Otherwise, you could always rent plates and silverware to reduce the waste, but that could get pretty expensive.

I would totally be willing to rent nice plates and silverware, but the barn is newly updated but still rustic and does not have any sort of functioning kitchen - meaning we’d have no way to rinse off/wash them 😕 I found sets of plastic plates that are made to look like China on amazon but the reviews are pretty mixed. Luckily I have some time to research and decide

If you're worried about the one-use plastic waste, I would suggest going with something like bamboo plates. They are actually really popular right now. pinterest bamboo plates

Here's one set I found with a quick search: bamboo party pack
