Eccentric cake flavors?

Yam, on July 14, 2019 at 8:08 PM Posted in Planning 0 17
My cake tasting appointment is tomorrow afternoon, FH and I are picky with cake. We bake for a hobby, there’s always yummy smells in the house! Do you think either of these flavors would appeal to guests?

Italian lemon cream cake
Banana cream cake

I prefer fruit flavored cake and hate chocolate, FH loves mellow fruit flavored cake(nothing tart like raspberry) and also hates chocolate. We’re having a dessert table with chocolate cupcakes, almond rose bundt cakes, honey cakes and berry pie. Do you think guests will miss a more standard wedding cake flavor?

Oh my gosh I’d love lemon blueberry! FH hates blueberries though. Your cake flavors sound amazing.

I think since you have other options (a few more standard) you can go a little eccentric on the cake flavors. If that was your only dessert, I'd opt for a "safe" flavor. Italian lemon cream sounds delicious!

    Thanks! Our thought process was:
    1. FH wanted red velvet (one of his few wedding requests). This is also our rich flavor.
    2. Vanilla caramel for a more light/plain flavor
    3. Lemon blueberry for a fruit flavor!

I figured having options in different flavor categories would be the easiest way to please the most people.

Also, someone on here had made a discussion where everyone listed their cake flavors. I made a huge list of the ones I thought sounded good and narrowed it down from there. It was super helpful!

Thanks! Food has definitely been the most stressful of the planning. I have diabetic guests, children guests, guests who hate cake, ect. I’m hoping the dessert table has something for everyone.
I just really want a wedding cake that I’d want to eat.

I feel a lot better about the cake now. Every wedding I’ve been to had vanilla or chocolate cake so that’s the standard around here.

The only chocolate cake I can stand is a bitter espresso chocolate cake and the only vanilla I can stand is chai vanilla spice. Our bakery doesn’t have those options and I don’t want to burden them! I hope fruit will be light and sweet and appeal to a lot of guests.

I personally hate fruit cakes, they're popular for weddings where I am (as is carrot cake?) and I just don't like it. I also hate chocolate cake unless it's dark or flourless. Although your dark espresso sounds heavenly.
I'd say as long as they're mellow don't worry about it, it's one night and it's dessert. People like dessert!

We’re doing white cake, fresh strawberries for the filling and sugar cookie icing! We had out tasting the other day and the strawberries and sugar cookie icing was just omg!!!!! And I love that it’s not a cake I’ve seen at any weddings I’ve been to. Whatever you choose, I’m sure you’re guests will love!

Appointment is in a couple hours but I’m hoping they can do an actual italian lemon cream cake which isn’t a tart cake. A straight up sour sponge wouldn’t fit. It should be light, fluffy and sweet. I’m honestly going to feel disappointed if it’s a mouth puckeringly tart cake.

Italian lemon cream sounds YUM!!! Because you’re also having chocolate cupcakes and all those other desserts, you’re totally fine.

Update : Booked my cake! I highfived my FH. First bakery we went to, bam! Delicious cake, nice staff, super comfortable with our design and had gumpaste flowers for us to choose from. Cake came in right under budget and we paid on the spot. My DREAM cake, with flowers and butterflies and delicate scrollwork. UNDER budget. Pinch me.

Man it feels good. Wedding stress gets both of us down, this was definitely a winning moment.
