Easy vegan meals?

Sarah, on May 28, 2021 at 11:14 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 14

My fiance and I are considering a small wedding down at the beach, followed by a big low country boil with our closest friends and family. All in all, we have three vegans that will most likely be attending the wedding, and one person with a seafood allergy. We won't have a caterer, so I need some good ideas for alternative meals to these people that wouldn't require a lot of preparation.

What kind of kitchen will you have access to? Has anyone that will be cooking been trained in how to ensure none of the food becomes cross-contaminated? Something like a grilled portabello dish can be pretty simple. I would just be nervous that whoever is handling the vegan/allergy dishes should either not be handling the seafood or should be a trained professional.

How serious is the seafood allergy? Some people with that allergy can't even be around cooked seafood.

I think it would be simplest and safest to order 4 to-go meals for those guests. Either arrange to have them delivered at dinner time or choose something that works as cold meals.

I have vegan guests coming as well and we will be serving them grilled portabella mushrooms stuffed with ratatouille with marinara sauce and seasonal vegetable side. We are having our favorite restaurant cater. I was a vegetarian for a few years so I have tried their vegan entrees before so I know how delicious this is. Even non-vegans like it if you put some cheese on top. It's relatively easy and inexpensive to make.

A low country boil won’t work if you have any seafood allergies. Without a caterer, I would be paranoid that whoever is cooking doesn’t have knowledge or understanding of avoiding cross contamination.

As far as vegan meals, if you wanted to keep with the beach/bbq theme, look into meatless burgers and potato or pasta salad. Look at Pinterest for recipe suggestions. A friend of mine is vegan and she gets most of her ideas there.

I honestly think the best option would be to serve a secondary option that is vegan friendly not only for those that are vegan, but also for the person that is allergic to seafood and those who don't like seafood. I know numerous people who aren't allergic to seafood, but they won't eat it because they simply don't like it. I also think you have to be very careful to make sure that food is not cross contaminated. Also some people with allergies can't even be near the food so you might want to make sure the person won't have an allergic reaction just attending your reception. For our wedding, we had a buffet, but for those with allergies or those who were vegan they received a plated meal which was a vegan risotto with grilled veggies.

Agree with the PPs that it would be best to order these meals separately. I'd contact some local restaurants that offer vegan catering or takeout. You should also have a conversation with the person allergic to seafood ahead of time. I'm allergic to seafood, and while I could be seated next to someone eating a piece of fish, I would probably have to decline an event with a low country boil out of safety. Depending on the severity of the guest's allergy, you would want to make sure that their meal is prepared in a separate kitchen entirely.

Be very careful if someone is allergic to anything I would be nervous having someone preparing my food if I was allergic to seafood.

Definitely find out how bad the allergy is first.
Then like for a beach wedding. I would say pasta salads. Potato salads. Anything pasta is also good. That’s me I love pastas 😁

Just as a heads up, many pastas contain eggs. There are lots of types of pastas that don't, maybe just make sure. Rice pasta is a good alternative.

In terms of easy to serve vegan dishes, ratatouille is good, as would be rice/veggie stir fry or many Indian dishes, like pakoras.

Ordering to go meals from a vegan restaurant is a good idea. I would be EXTREMELY careful about serving anyone with a seafood allergy food that was prepared around your other ingredients. If you accidentally use the same water to boil lobsters and potatoes you could send someone to the hospital.

Vegan food really isn't that difficult. Whenever I have people over for a backyard party I usually make one option that is both gluten free and vegan to meet the needs of multiple guests. My favorite go-to options are a cold peanut noodle dish (obviously no good for people allergic to peanuts) made with rice noodles or a red lentil curry served with rice.

I am vegan and when I am someone else's wedding guest I am happy with whatever option is provided! It can be hard to accommodate people's dietary restrictions, but if you have a few items they can eat I am sure they will be pleased.

Pasta with marinara is good (standard grocery store pasta is usually vegan, just check for eggs). Roasted veggies (oil not butter) are yummy. Veggie tray with hummus (for vegans and non vegans). Veggie burgers or dogs if it's a more casual affair. All types of salads (veggie salad, pasta or grain salad, etc).
Is there a way to "veganize" the meal you are serving to the rest of the guests?
Takeout from a vegan place might be easier for you than making a separate meal for these people.

My go to for when I have vegan friends over is a middle eastern platter with falafel, hummus, pita bread, tabbouleh salad and other small salads, all store bought and just a matter of plating up.
