Depends on what music you want them to play. Some better in duo, some better in trio.

I would suggest a trio. I originally wanted a quartet, but the group I wanted is sooooo expensive. They also offered duo and trio services, so I listened extensively to both. The difference between the two was huge. The trio definitely sounds more full and complete, where the duo can sound quite sparse. Songs were missing supporting lines with the duo. If it is within your budget, go with the trio!

I’m a violinist. 3 is always better because you will get a richer harmony.

It’s pretty standard to do 2 violins and a cello. Violin, viola, and cello will have a similar sound. 3 violins is also very pretty but you won’t have that bass sound.
