Drinking responsibly at altitude

Zoe, on January 3, 2017 at 10:41 PM Posted in Planning 0 14

Hey everyone! My wedding is going to be in Denver and many of the guests are out of towners, so they aren't used to the altitude. Alcohol has a stronger effect on people here than at sea level and I want to remind my guests of this with a cute sign or something at the bar. I want it to be specific to altitude though. Any ideas?

How many guests are you inviting? Maybe personally tell them a week or so before. Something at the bar may come off tacky.

Put it on a wedding website and maybe chat with the bartender about reminding people about the altitude.

180 guests. I will definitely post it on the website but I'm unsure of how many people are going to look at the page of the website where it would make sense to put it.

We live outside of Denver and are getting married in Steamboat. I'm making welcome bags (only need 12) and including a little note about the altitude, reminding people to stay hydrated and that the sun is even more strong at that altitude. Especially since half the group will be coming from sea level in Florida.

Maybe something that says "Fun Facts About Denver" where you can include a fun fact about higher altitude=lower alcohol tolerance. You can do this on the website or potentially make a sign but idk where such a sign would go.

My friend got married in Denver, where she lives now (actually, one of my BMs) and she had it plastered all over her website to stay hydrated and other info about how to avoid altitude sickness. And she was definitely right! FH and I didn't get sick cause we reminded each other constantly to "hydrate" and kept aware of drunkenness levels. Even sober, we noticed a difference. Mile high city is no joke!

I suggest that you word it like a PSA instead of a cute poem, people are likely to take it more seriously (as they should)

I love the idea of fun facts. Maybe add them to welcome bags or programs if your doing that

I'm from Houston (nearly below sea level at some points) and the biggest "mountain" I had ever seen was, in fact, just a hill so when I went to Colorado boy was I surprised. Sadly, no one reminded me of the altitude difference and I ended up shit faced after barely 2 drinks. I personally would have loved a cutesy sign or a helpful bartender.

I'm from Houston too Smiley smile that's where many of the guests live. I love the idea of putting it in the welcome bags. I wasn't planning on doing welcome bags just because of the number of guests coming from out of town. I'll probably just go with cards with fun facts and things to do.

That's considerate and a great idea to mention for guests to be hydrated. I visited a friend in Denver in March a couple years ago and had trouble going to the bathroom. Her and her mom said to keep drinking extra water because of the altitude. Never knew my body could be affected like that.

Denver bride! We are suggesting out of towners come in a few days ahead of time (if they can!) to acclimate to the altitude.

Alcohol aside, altitude sickness is no joke.

We are also providing shuttles to and from the hotel so everyone can enjoy the wedding to their desired extent Smiley winking

Cute signs irritate adults. Leave it up to licensed bartenders to cut off those who've had to much to drink.

I work in catering so I honestly have trouble trusting just the bartenders.
