Drink tickets😬

Mandy, on August 16, 2020 at 11:40 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 11
To start this discussion I want to say personally I am not super crazy about drink tickets.. however our venue does not supply alcohol for the reception, only the bartender and bar supplies, therefore we have to buy all the alcohol ourselves. We are only offering beer and wine, and the venue does not allow a cash bar. I am not crazy about drink tickets, but I would hate to not buy enough alcohol and then run out of alcohol during the reception. So I guess my question is what’s worse, giving out drink tickets(we were thinking 4-5 per person) or having the possibility of running out of alcohol? We have a pretty strict budget and cannot afford to buy a whole bunch of extra alcohol. We will have roughly 130 guest and the reception will be from 4:30-8pm

Thank you in advance!

I personally think that drink tickets are rather tacky, but to each their own. However, if budget is the issue and you're concerned with running out overbuying, then I'd try to purchase your alcohol from a store that lets you return the unopened bottles. We purchased enormous cases of wine, beer, and champagne for our 75-person rehearsal dinner/welcome party from a large chain store that allowed us to return all of the unconsumed alcohol afterwards, as long as the bottles weren't open. We were allowed to return all unopened bottles of wine and champagne, and all beer as long as the packaging on the 6-pack in question was untouched. Now I'm not sure if many stores are doing this currently with Covid, but I'd look into it as an option.

If you are estimating 4-5 drinks per person, I think you just go with an open bar and not worry about drinks tickets. sounds like you are going to be covered.

    150 GUESTS:

    • 105 bottles of wine
    • 266 bottles of beer
    • 22 bottles of liquor (750 ml)
    • 30 bottles of champagne for toast (optional)

Assume guests will have 2 drinks in the first hour of the open bar, and 1 additional drink each following hour.

I wouldn't think that you'd run out of wine and beer if you're estimating enough for folks to have 4 or 5 drinks. I personally don't like tickets because they're easy to lose or can get knicked from tables. I think you're providing plenty of alcohol as is.

I agree with Samantha that if you're planning to give everyone 4-5 drink tickets, you already have enough drinks for everyone and tickets aren't needed. Aside from being tacky (personal opinion), tickets are easily misplaced and shared/taken among guests. If you're really worried, you can ask the bartenders to shut down the bar during certain times. It's common to close the bar for intros, speeches, and all or part of dinner service. There are several drink calculators out there (I like the one on Evite) to help you plan. But I think you're already on the right track!

Use a drink calculator to help you figure out how much wine and beer to purchase and purchase it from somewhere that will let you return unopened bottles if possible. Drink tickets for social events are tacky.

I would skip the drink tickets and just buy enough alcohol.

Is your local store not able to take returns? I 100% understand a strict budget, but just thinking if you still managed to over-buy, then being able to return unopened bottles could save you some money! I'd ask.

Consult a drink calculator (including for nonalcoholic beverages) and provide what you can afford. Don't do drink tickets or charge your guests.

Costco is your best bet for supplying your own drinks.
