Dressing up a hotel reception

Meghan, on June 9, 2020 at 11:44 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 11
Hi all-
Excited to start planning our 6/5/21 wedding but decided to host our reception at a hotel with amazing views of Chicago. Problem is, the hotel has awful orange light fixtures and distracting carpet. Both clash our navy & blush theme. Any advice??

Honestly? I'd expect most guests won't notice either the light fixtures or the carpet. If it's an evening reception, the lighting will likely be MUCH more dim than in this photo and once there are people in the room the carpet will be pretty much invisible. I'd see if you can tour the space at about the time of your reception (or see photos from evening receptions held in the space) and talk with the coordinator about variations in how to use the available lighting. It's probably all on dimmers, and when turned down, the ceiling fixtures probably have more of a goldish soft glow. You can potentially add uplighting and/or candles on the tables (probably battery operated for most venue codes), along with the twinkle lights to provide softer lighting. If you're having a dance floor, it will cover a good chunk of the visible floorspace. If you otherwise are happy with the venue/space, I'd try to make peace with the things that will be hard to change and realize you'll probably be the only person to even notice them. Good luck!

I actually think the setting looks nice but i can see how it clashes with your colors. i don't think there's much you can do regarding the fixtures and carpet because it's just a part of your venue. like pp said i don't think people will notice.

I think the space in and of itself looks nice! However, I agree it will completely clash with your colors. If it were me, I would decide which was more important to me- the venue or the color scheme. If you stick with the venue, I’d choose a color combo that works WITH the space, instead of against it. If you are dead set on the colors you’ve chosen, I’d try to find a more neutral space that will accommodate your colors.

The best piece or advice I heard was to pick colors that go with the setting rather than trying to fight against it. This was from my sister in law, who is an event planner and florist. We actually ended up completing changing our original color palette idea because it would clash with the dark green carpet and gold light fixtures we had in the reception space.

I agree with this pp that the room actually has a fairly neutral color scheme (except for the purple uplights in this photo -- I'd get rid of those!). To me, it's all shades of cream/tan/brown, which are all neutrals. I don't think you'll have any issue with your navy & blush (think about how classic a pair of khakis with a navy blazer and blush colored blouse would look; that's basically your same color scheme!). I can't tell if the tables are wood or have black tablecloths on them in this photo. If they are tablecloths, I think the room will look much different if you switch them out for cream, blush, or navy cloths. If they are a wood finish, then you could do blush runners. The room is a nice neutral canvas that should be a wonderful backdrop for whatever decor choices you want to add. If the room had lime green carpet or red chairs/drapes, I think that would be a lot harder to work with, but this is going to be beautiful! Good luck!

It looks like the table cloths are black. So i 2nd either cream or navy tablecloth. Or navy tablecloths with blush colored flowers and/or table runner and blush cloth napkins

I personally believe the carpeting isn't nice. The circles and the color stand out so much. If it didnt have shapes, it would be better. But it does. Flooring REALLY defines the room. Especially when it doesn't match the theme. As for the lights, they're easier to not care about compared to the flooring. Trust me, when the carpet is covered, the walls are draped, and then your blush and navy theme is added on top of it, it's going to look SO CUTE.

You could hire a nice event planning service that can get the floor covered up and fix the issues, as well create a nice blush and blue setting Smiley winking They'll remove it and clean up too. They do that kind of stuff all of the time. It'll be a bit more costly, no more than 10K for sure. Like near 3k I believe. If you're open to that, find out if the hotel will allow that, I think a lot do. For 10k, they can drape the room, add a dancefloor, and completely change the space to look magical. Even provide their luxury own chairs and tables that you like.

I don't think people will notice it. Unless you are paying a lot of money to drape the ceiling then it will all work out. Good luck and enjoy. I actually like the look of the room set up. (although the carpet is busy)

You’ll have to focus the decoration to the tables. I wouldn’t put hanging lights on the ceiling if you don’t want people look at them. To be honest you might be able to make it work. In your floral arrangements or centerpieces (whatever you are choosing) you can pick up some peachy tones to mesh with the blush. That way that orange fixture will look like it belongs with the decor.
