Dress with sleeves in August?

Kaitlyn, on September 26, 2020 at 10:04 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 22

Hi all! I have always dreamed of a fall wedding and wearing a dress with sleeves. I also have tattoos on my arm that ideally I would like to cover. After getting engaged recently, we have found that it's been extremely difficult to find a venue available next year. So when we found one that we love that's available in August, we jumped on it. Our ceremony will be outside and the reception will be indoors with AC. Has anyone worn a dress with sleeves in the summer? What was your experience? I'm not going to limit myself to only dresses with sleeves, but I don't really want my tattoos to be a focal point or a topic of conversation on my big day.

Thank you!!

Well, if your ceremony and reception are indoors with good AC then I wouldn’t see an issue with long sleeves

Sorry, I forgot to mention that the ceremony will be outside and the reception will be indoors.

I would say you are good as long as the sleeves are not solid material. Most sleeves on dresses these days are pretty "airy". Maybe you can even find a dress that has removable sleeves for indoors. The salon I bought my dress just did a social media post about removable sleeves. Just an option

I considered sleeves for my dress (also getting married in August and I like the look of sleeves). However, I decided against it. Obviously, this depends on where you live but, August is hot, not July hot but not cool like September/October.

Also is there a reason you want your tattoos cover? I have one that will be visible with my dress and I love that! It's usually hidden because it's on my shoulder so it's kind of nice to show it off one day. Do you dislike some of them or is there pressure from family? Most of those close to you most likely have seen them so I don't think they would be that much of a focal point. Espically if you find a dress that compliments them.

Of course, it's all about what makes you comfortable. Really if your ceremony is outside you'll mostly be only doing pictures and your ceremony outside. But, even indoors, if you plan on dancing you might get hot again.

This is really helpful, thank you! I just have one that if I could go back in time, I would get it somewhere else that's easy to hide. It was a spur of the moment tattoo and I wish I would have thought through it a little more. I'm afraid of looking back at pictures and regretting having it show.

    You're very welcome! Smiley heart

Ah, that makes sense. Well if sleeves might be too hot have you thought maybe covering it? That way you could hide the one you're worried about while keeping the others.

I have considered this and I really wish it was an option because it would make my life so much easier lol but the tattoo is right on my bicep above the bend in my arm so I would be afraid of the makeup rubbing off on my dress :/

Oh, that makes sense! Then maybe not full-length sleeves but something like a 3/4s. You could also try a sleeve that length that is all lace so that it really can't be seen but won't necessarily make you feel hotter. I'm sorry that it's in such an awkward spot! The best thing is to start dress shopping and play around with different sleeve types. The best thing about dresses is the sleeves can be added or removed from any wedding dress you try on! You could customize a sleeve style that works well with them!

    Good luck!

Light weight or lacy sleeve are fine, though I would avoid acetate or Satin.
I not only like the looks of sleeves, but they are so much easier and cooler ( white reflects the sunlight) and nicer than dealing with sunblock, and any bit of grease is death to fine fabrics.

I went to a friend’s wedding that took place in August and she had long lace sleeves. Her ceremony was outside and reception inside with AC. She didn’t regret it at all!

If the dress you fall in love with doesn't have sleeves, talk to your photographer about hiding it or airbrushing it out.

I’ve seen dress toppers with sleeves, kinda like a bolero or shell, you want to cover your tattoos, but would you consider lace sleeves? Would cover the tattoos enough that they’re not in the spotlight so much but wouldn’t be too thick/hot.
