Dress too long!

Kb Moody, on October 7, 2020 at 2:49 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 7

Ok, so it was decided in late August that we would get married on Halloween, its not to going to be huge and its more of a party with a little ceremony before hand. I ordered this dress off of Amazon and gave them my measurements. Everything fits perfect (I didnt have it laced all the way in the pic because its difficult to do while wearing it) but the dress is too long in the front and especially in the back as it has a train I didnt know about. I really cannot afford alterations, especially with only a couple weeks left. Has anyone ever shortened their own dress with something other than actual alterations? Please share, I need help!!!
P.s. I am wearing a crinoline slip

Dresses with significant detailing at the bottom tend to have more expensive alterations because the lace has to be removed, the dress hemmed, and the lace sewn back on. Alternatively, sometimes the dress is taken apart at the waist and the fabric cut from there, then sewn back together. Because of the style of this dress I don't see that as a viable option either.

Without actually altering the dress, your two options are bigger crinoline/hoop skirt and/or higher heels. How much do you need to take off?

At this point, sorry to say, I would probably find a different dress if it were me.

My first suggestion was going to be to wear crinoline under it LOL but it looks like you already tried that. If the bottom of the skirt was just tulle, it would be possible for you to cut it on your own. But, since yours has that beautiful black lace trim, I don’t think there’s any way you will be able to shorten it without a professional seamstress. At this point, the only thing I could suggest would be taller shoes. The dress is beautiful though!

That is not going to be a simple alteration. Because the dress has appliques (the black lace overlay part), those need to be removed by hand before the dress is shortened, and then reapplied after. It's a pretty time intensive, skilled alteration, and usually a fairly expensive one.

Your best bet is a wider skirt or taller heels! What a great Halloween wedding dress though!

I'd just embrace the length and/or wear taller shoes. You can even wear a bulky platform since it won't be seen. I think you'll be fine!

Get an alterations appointment ASAP! You need that dress shortened and a bustle put in. It might not be as expensive or take as long as you think it will. And maybe order some super tall platform sneakers off Amazon as a backup plan (though that will NOT solve the issue of the train, you’ll be slugging that around on your arm all night long if you don’t put in a bustle).

It’s a beautiful gown. I’d just wear a higher heel.
