Dress too big?

Mrs. T, on April 14, 2015 at 4:00 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 8

When I decided on my dress at the bridal salon, the consultant took my measurements and ordered a size 8 which she said was more like a street size 6. My concern was that the sample was an 8 and I was totally swimming in it. She assured me that samples stretch. My dress is supposed to come in at the end of this month, and I am so worried that it's going to be huge. I know that I should expect alterations, but has anyone ever had a dress be so big that alternations changed the fit of the dress for the worse? That's what I'm afraid of.

That dress is gorgeous. I think you should be fine, she's done this before, she knows what's up. The alterations shouldn't alter the fit of the dress.

Only way to get my dress in time for my wedding was to order it 2 sizes too big. I was totally freaked out. Alterations are turning out just fine but there is A LOT that needed to be done. The dress alterations was the only thing that freaked me throughout my wedding process. You're not alone.

It is always better to go big to be safe. It would be worse if you got a dress and it wouldn't zip because the seams don't have a lot of give for most of these dresses. Alterations only go wonky when you go too far from the regular fit of the dress. It is usually 2 or 3 size differences.

Samples definitely stretch, so I wouldn't worry about. Consultants that work in bridal salons see this day in and day out. I wouldn't worry.

I think it'll be fine for alterations. This is my suspicion: they purposely order dresses that are larger so that you DEFINITELY HAVE to get alterations. I'm sure if you're an odd (not in a bad way) shape this is the best way to go, however depending on the style of the dress etc, sometimes it's completely unnecessary to order larger. For a BM dress and my own wedding dress I ordered I did my own measurements, ordered in the size that matched best and didn't have to do any alterations (other than hem). When I got measured by a seamstress, it was way off from the measurements I had taken so I disregarded them and used my own, and boy am I glad.

This is my probably just me having a conspiracy theory, though.

I love your dress. Sample dresses are always stretched out. I had a consultant push a bigger size onto my bridesmaid and it was so big on her that it cost a lot of $$ just to have it altered to her actual size. The only good thing was the dress came out fine and didn't look worse.

Thanks for the responses and compliments Smiley smile Very helpful.

My mom is the suspicious type, and she has been concerned about the same thing, LadyMonk. I guess I was hoping to go in and try on my dress and have it be perfect haha. Obviously that's not going to happen without some alterations.
