Dress to big

Deianeir, on March 4, 2020 at 1:31 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 9
I ordered my dress in January and I got it yesterday 3/2/2020 and I’ve lost 20lbs since January and so now the dress is to big... I am wanting to loose more weight before our wedding in September but I am worried that the dress will be to big to be altered. So my question is.... How much can a dress be altered and or should I try to just return the dress?

How much bigger is the dress now? Like if you were to get alterations done now — no more losing weight— how many inches would they have to take it in?

I ordered my dress a size small with the intentions of losing 10 lbs. when it came in, I had only lost 4 lbs, but the dress fit with very minor alterations. I ended up losing another 12 lbs in 5 weeks and only did two round of alterations (5 weeks after first fitting was the first and 1 week later for hemming and minor taking in around the hips). My dress had details and lace that was super intricate so my seamstress wanted to do most of the heavy lifting in one sessions. She took my dress in 7 inches around the waist.
For reference though, I have a small frame (5 ft and was hovering 116-118 lb when I ordered my dress) so 16 lbs lost on my body would look closer to 25-30 lbs lost on an average height woman.
Another bride that was in the shop getting alterations done ordered her dress a size small too, but DIDN’T lose the weight. However, she was already a bit heavier and taller than me. So according to the seamstress, for her to lose 16 lbs wouldn’t take her down a dress size. She would realistically need to lose at least over 20 lbs to fit her properly. Smiley sad

Your picture didn’t attach. All you have to do is bring it to your seamstress and she’ll let you know. But generally dresses can be let out one size up and taken in three sizes down.

Also share some weight loss tips girl! 20 pounds in one month is amazing.

Ask your seamstress, most dresses can be taken in quite a bit it might just cost you more. Alot of places also have a no return policy so watch for that

A dress can be altered 2 sizes down before it affects the cut of the dress.

    Hi Deianier,
Congratulations on your weight loss, my seamstress says most dresses can be taken in 2 to 3 sizes depending on the style, I have a fit and flare which is going to be taken in 2 sizes.Dress to big 1

    Dress to big 2
This is the dress, I’m a bigger girl it’s size 18w but when I loose weight it comes off of my stomach and upper body first so that is the part of the dress that holds its self up so it’s falling down a lot while showing my mom and sister. I was 245 now 225 and I’m hopping to get down to at least 200 by my wedding and I’m 5’6 so I’m just worried... I’m going to be talking to someone about how much they can alter it soon but have been freaking out over it.. Smiley sad but I want to thank you guys for everyone that has said they usually can go down about two sizes because even at 200 back a few years ago I was always like around a size 12-14 so hopefully that is a size they can get it down to without messing with the look.
