Dress taken out?

Butterfly, on December 6, 2015 at 10:25 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 15

Have any of you had your dress taken out? How was your experience? My dress fits me perfectly other than being too tight around my rib-cage. I really don't have any weight to lose in that area. I'm 5'4 and 115 pounds. My dress has a lace illusion back. It's Briony by Maggie Sottero. Will they actually be able to use extra fabric to take it out like my sales associate said they would? Or would I just have to deal with it? Definitely can't order a new dress now and a size bigger would be too big, anyway. My first fitting will be in February. When I tried the gown on in July, I was at 113 pounds. Ugh.

This depends on the construction of the dress. Hopefully you have a generous seam allowance in yours and they'll be able to let them out a bit. My friend had to do this with her gown and it turned out beautifully.

Butterfly - to clarify, your sales associate said they could add extra material to the dress to offset the dress being too small? That is concerning because generally those assessments are made by a seamstress. It may be possible to let the dress out around the bustline. Check the seams of your dress to see if there is extra material. That will be where they will let it out.

If there is not enough material to perform the alteration, I would recommend purchasing the larger size and altering it to fit you. Rarely, will a gown fit perfectly without alterations and they will be able to taylor the dress to fit you exactly.

Normally the sales associates advise the exact opposite of what yours told you. They usually go by the biggest measurement and should've said to get a size bigger. That being said, most dresses can be let out a little bit, so it really shouldn't be a problem as long as you don't need it let out too too much. Ask the seamstress though.

Yes, my sales associate said that. A seamstress hasn't even looked at it yet. It really is the only area that is tight, though. It fits just fine around my bust and waist, so it won't be worth it to order a new one. My dress took 6 months to come in, so there definitely won't be enough time. I'm really hoping there is enough material. It bothers me the most when I first have the dress on, but after I'm moving around, it's not as bad. Maybe they can extend the area around the zipper? Not sure how it all works!

It will really depend on the extra left in the seems. Also just so you know they can't just take out one spot, they have to let it out all the way down to where it needs to be let out and then taken in where it needs to be. For the most part it's easier to take on verses letting out. I also read the part about moving around and getting better, have you sat with it on? That can be tighter then just standing.

Good to know. I didn't sit down in it at all. I should definitely try that next time. Oy. Maybe I should make my fitting appointment for earlier than planned..

You won't need extra material to let the dress out unless it was something drastic, like a pregnancy belly. Most clothing has some extra inches of fabric in the seams for that purpose. However, that's really something that should have been double-checked with the alterations team before you purchased the dress. Also, it may depend on the material. For example, my dress was taffeta and they said that material does not do well to be let out because you will be able to see where the original stitches were.

Sorry Butterfly - looks like your sales associate put you in a bind. Who is the designer of your dress?

Maggie Sottero. It's Briony from Fall 2014.

*facepalm* I promise I did read your entire post.

From what I have googled, it looks like Maggie dresses provide a wide seam allowance . You should be fine.

I don't have anything else to add to what the other girls have already said, but I wanted to tell you that I LOVE your dress. It's actually one I'm hoping to see when I go shopping. I can't wait to see you in it!

Thank you, Nicole! I'll tell you story of how I found it! First, we went to one bridal salon where I tried on about 10 dresses. I'd like one half of the dress, but not the other half! No luck there! Then we went to a Maggie Sottero trunk show. The bridal salon is pretty far from me, so I really was just planning on going there to get ideas. Let me tell you...I walked right up to the Briony dress and pulled it out to try on! It was the first one I tried on there and was sold, but wanted to try on others just to sure. So I tried like another 9 dresses. There was one that was my second favorite. I think it was Fleur. But Briony was still my number one favorite. So I tried it on again. Then the amazing feeling occurred to me that it was the one! When they put a veil on me and handed me flowers, I burst out in tears. I was picturing walking towards my FH. My MOH cried, and even the sales associate shed tears. One BM said I looked like an angel and another said a princess. It was the perfect dress for me. I recently got my veil, and it really completes the look. I will definitely post pics after the wedding. I'm being too superstitious about having pictures taken of me in the dress before then, for some reason. I highly recommend trying it on!

It depends on the dress. My dress, they ended up lowering the zipper instead of taking it out

If the sales associate said it could be taken out, that person should know. Most dresses have enough extra fabric in the seams so that they can be taken out a size or so. Lower end dresses often have enough to be taken out more than that.

Mine was taken out in the bodice, and was fine.
